Re: plug wires

well i said wire the dizzy instead of switching oil pumps not due to the cost, but due to the LABOR involved in switching oil pumps. but i'm sure i don't need to tell you how laborious that is now that you just did it haha.

just think of it as a good learning experience haha

Re: plug wires

Just take the dizzy off you will see the part that goes into the end of the cam, it can go in 2 way. If you spin that 180 it will give you different timing, if it is popping and backfiring then it's either that or the plug wire order is messed up still. If the engine had the distributor on it at all times then it's prob not that but if you have taken it off a couple times or u just put a new dizzy on it could be that problem

Re: plug wires

well if it was off then that could be the prob just spin that part 180 the hardest part is trying to get it to go back into the cam unless you take the cap off and just wiggle the rotor till it goes in but make sure u don't spin so far you forget if its 180 or back to where it was, i did that one time lol.

thats bc it wont, the slot is off centered so it will only go in one way. you have one of the following problems:

1.) A plug or plugwire could be bad, are they new ones?

2.) You still don't have the firing order correct, the cylinders read right to left, so if you are standing at the front of the car looking at the motor they will be numbered as follows:
distributor, 4-3-2-1, cam gears

3.) You could also be a couple of teeth off when you did your timing. Did you check and recheck it when you put the belt on?

the plug wires are about a month old. and i got the fireing order right i am pretty sure. i think its the timeing it keeps making a popping noise when it trys to turn over

Re: plug wires

I would have to agree to recheck your timing and the way you set up you wires, as far as the dizzy mine would allow me to turn it 180 but that was on a h23, your's may be different since it is a h22. If your timing is off then it will cause the same popping and backfiring problem if the valves aren't opening and closing when they are supposed to.

you dont have to to check your timing, just pull those covers back off. the whole job can be done with the motor in the car, i did mine about a month ago.

Re: plug wires

In order to see the cam timing marks, you will probably need the valve cover off and the top plastic cover. In order to see the crank and balance shaft timing marks..bottom cover.

And don't forget the flywheel timing mark in the little window on the tranny.

somethings still not right, if you have the timing right and the correct firing order it should start right up. did you plug the injectors into their corresponding harness plugs?

Re: plug wires

Assuming you looked at the timing with both covers off to make sure that the crank and cams were both in the proper area then you will have to go to the basics. Check the spark, check that there is fuel getting to the injectors, and make sure all the wiring is hooked up(grounds are important). If you have a check engine light on get the codes.
