Car starts up funny...

new to the preludezone!

so, every morning... (or starting from cold), the car cranks but does not fire up as it used to. it takes a lot longer..

i can hear the starting motor turning away, but just doesn't 'kick' in.
once it does start up, it runs fine. warm start is no problem.

this is what i have done recently...
* new spark plugs - NGK Iridium
* new spark plug wires - i forgot the brand
* new distributor cap/rotors - from honda of course...
* new battery - did not help.

what should i check for?

thanks in advance for your advice!

ball park about 2 times longer than before.

*guestimating*
it used to start within 5 cranks of starter motor..
these days, it takes like 10 cranks

Re: Car starts up funny...

10 cranks is a lot, mine usually starts within 2 or 3. Have you ever overheated in the past while? Since you've got spark you should check your fuel and compression. As for compression all you need to do is crank your engine with a compression tester, and your readings for each cylinder should be about the same. You should also check your fuel pump and relay I've heard those fail often too.

Re: Car starts up funny...

does it run fine after it? because i've had the similiar problem earlier last semester, my reason because i put to much oil like a noob + cold weather.

but it cranks...
just takes long a while to fire up. if the car has starter issue... it wouldn't even crank, no?

Re: Car starts up funny...

A weak starter would cause excess cranking.

Re: Car starts up funny...

average number doesn't really matter as long as all cylinders are about the same number maybe 5-10 away from each other is good, average numbers go from 195-200 but if all four are relatively close to each other then its good.

Just to throw one more info... It's worse when fuel is low!

Still think starter? If yes, I'll try to replace that sucker :)

Re: Car starts up funny...

Are you running at least 91 octane gas? You should be.
Are you using the right viscosity oil? Should be 5w-30. (my lude is)

The number one reason for slow cranking is a weak battery. Or its possible your starter is weak or has high resistance in the starter circuit.

Also, when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? Timing belt? Thermostat?

Re: Car starts up funny...

Your battery prolly doesn't have the needed CCA. Which is cold cranking amps. Which is why you're having a problem in the cold.

Like I said before, number one cause of slow cranking is a weak battery.

Re: Car starts up funny...

wow I'm glad i found this.
I've been having the same problem.
I recently changed the ECU due to a bad No. 1 cylinder position sensor.
and it was starting up fine when i first got it changed. its been about a week and its taking a lot longer to start up now. i had this problem even before changing the ECU.
and it takes longer when im low on fuel as well.
any suggestions?

Re: Car starts up funny...

i still haven't found much about this.. i recently had problem with leaky injectors, but that' s fixed and i was hoping i'd get lucky and it "piggybacK' fixes it.. but no.

i have stock ECU, takes longer when i'm on low fuel. weird...

Holy sh!t, your 5th gen does the same thing my 4th gen does. I just figured it was because my engine had 180k miles on it lol.
