Icon14 Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

A little backstory. My wife got into an accident on Saturday, and her 2001 VW Beetle was totaled she had the 1.8 turbo, and it was a fun car. Anyway, she drives about 120 miles a day or more, so she is going to get my 2005 mustang for a while... until we either get a new house, or she demands seat time in our new 1998 Prelude. (It's coming, just don't know when, lol)

So, I decided I would buy me something economical but not so pedestrian that I wanted to shoot myself every day in my commute. I figured the Prelude would fit the bill. After today, I realized how wrong, and right I was. It has not only fit the bill, but has me seriously thinking that after our move, I might put the Mustang up for sale and just keep the Honda.

Even with 150k miles, this car is TIGHT. I already put a short ram intake on it today, and the response and sound over the magical 5200 rpm on the tach is surprisingly -- well -- instant gratification. 0-60 and even 1/4 mile times probably arent close to the mustang, but the polish and feel on this 12 year old car is drastically different than my 5 year old Ford.

She is an automatic, which now that I have done some digging appears to be a bit of an issue, and I am apprehensive of adding any more power - and need some advice on keeping the transmission from turning into a big anchor around my neck. Any suggestions, or tips on keeping this car on the road without any automatic transmission disasters? Are most people who are having problems using forced induction, or are we normally aspirated autos also succeptible?

Also, I am having a hard time finding dyno sheets with comparisons of Short ram vs. stock airboxes. the sound is great, but does it make much of a difference? On my mustang I had to use a tuner to change the air/fuel mixture from the larger diameter of the intake to the MAF.. this car doesnt have a MAF there at all. The tune on the Ford REALLY woke that thing up.

I have had the car for less than 12 hours, and have already been approached about it by a guy outside the pet store, looks like the 'Lude community is a passionate one. I am happy I made the choice to get one, sweet ride. (Just wish they hadnt dropped the ball on the transmission - it scares the **** out of me - as I dont have the cash around now to rebuild it if it craps out)..

I will be lurking around on here quite a bit over the coming months - who knows... maybe a long time to come. I look forward to your transmission advice, and any other tips you might have for a new Prelude owner.

Thanks!
-Pete

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

It seems like everything I have read is that the transmission is nothing but a timebomb waiting to happen. This car does have 150k on it, I wonder if it has been fixed once before. I am changing the ATF today with Honda ATF, and will do it again in a week or two. I had only planned on keeping the car a few months, and reselling it when we get our house trade done, but I am starting to like it. If the transmission goes out, I will do a swap and likely keep this car and sell the Mustang. It's just too clean.

Needs some new floormats...

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

the AT isn't going to take a dump on you unless its been driven hard in the past, and you are gonna drive it hard as well. If you drive it softly, it will last alot longer. The reason people say they are timebombs ( IMO ) is because of that lovely vtec. We can't stand not hearing it, being in it, and loving it. Just take it easy and it should be fine.

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

wow i love ur lude. ive got a 99 base in white.
ok so ur worried abt ur tranny, well the first thing to do is to change the fluid. go an get honda atf fluid, (DONT GO CHEAP). drain it an put in the new one and drive it around for abt 1500miles then check it, if it needs changing, change it lol. Then go get a tranny cooler, alot of tranny's fail because of heat, so the cooler u can make it the better.

then do a full tune up, change all fluids and belts and hoses, wires and plugs. (AGAIN buy good stuff, dont go cheap ok or else it would have been a waste)

Then do a sea foam 3part treatment, 1) can in ur gas, 1 can in ur oil and the last one in the throttle body, to clean out everything that doesnt need to be in there.

a header, test pipe, and 2.5in exhaust would be a nice add-on, then hid's and fog lights. maybe some mud-guards or sh-body kit and rear spoiler.

AMEN!!!

I had a crank n crank pulley that was slowly taking a sh*t on me and it was a matter of time before my motor went. As for my tranny i felt it slipping a lot every now and then.

I drove it normal for the most part but at times when I was AUTO that I couldnt help myself but tap the stick towards the "+" and shift gears to hit VTEC!!!

Jus drive it easy and when you have those urges jus becareful!!! Dont over do it to your tranny or it WILL go on you like mine was!!!

If you click the link under my sig you'll see what was done to my car and that one pic of the bolt....that's the tranny bolt that had mad heavy gunk on it that the color wasnt even maroon. It was near blk color along with massive amounts of metal shavings stuck to that magnetic tranny bolt!!!

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

Changed the fluid today, noticed the CV boot was torn on the passenger side - so will change it again when I am done with the axle. It might be in my head, but it seemed to be a lot smoother on the shifts afterward. Going to Zaino the car this weekend. Shuld look great when I am finished.

Thanks for the reassuring words, I am trying prety hard not to beat on it, will probably take the shortram intake off of there to eliminate the sweet sound it makes when the vtec kicks in - might help a little.

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

Welcome to PZ man, and white ludes FTW! From what I hear, just forget that you have tiptronic and you should be ok. lol. Also in the 5th gen section there is a GOOD article on auto tanny failures. If you read through there you will see the symptoms most report and how they drive the car, so on and so forth. I wouldn't be super worried about it if you don't beat the living piss out of it every time you pull up to a stoplight.

As far as dyno sheets go theres a thread on honda tech where one of the lude owners compared stock to short ram cai and some other. I think it showed that the car responded best to a short ram or stock with a k&n drop in. But as a general rule, the H22 just wont respond to bolt-ons all too well. It loves to be showered with money in order for it to show its full potential....unfortunately.But whatever.

Take it easy man, and welcome again.

theres no such thing as a dumb question bro

you can get the gauges from auto-meter, glow shift, or even autozone ( i dont reccomend it though)

most times when u order the gauges it comes with everything u need to fit it up. if ur not mechanically inclined take it to ur mechanic an he could do it lol

Congrats on the buy man welcome to the family! My friend has a 08 GT stang and i love that thing. But for the price/mpg and the longevity of a honda, its hard to go wrong with the prelude.

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

put two coats of Zaino on her today. Looks pretty decent. I really need to get after the paint with a clay bar though, the finish is still really rough.. also, any of you out there with a white Lude... how do you get the rear bumper clean from all the gunk from the emissions?

Put her on a lift at my mechanic's shop, and was AMAZED at how good it looked underneath. Clean clean clean. I'm really going to have a hard time choosing which car to keep in a few months.

NO! You don't put three cans in your car...You use 1/3 of a can for each step.

Re: Noob here, bought my first prelude today.

I actually like the prelude without the spoiler, it's a good clean look IMHO. I do design work at a sign company and was thinking of doing a decal for the front window, and maybe some sort of matte black pinstripe on the side, havent seen one with a stripe yet though to see if I like it. Something very understated to bring out the body lines a little.
