97 Base won't start.. Help please..

Help, I have a 97 that won’t start. No CELs are present. The car sounds like it turns over just fine with no resistance. No abnormal sounds, such as clicking, are noticed upon attempted start up. The battery has a full charge and is less than 6 months old. Tune up, (new cap & rotor, wires, plugs), new Ignition coil, T-Belt and water pump replacement, EGR Valve & IAC cleaning, new PCV valve, new fuel filter, all visible hoses replaced, were all done 4 months ago. The fuel pump sounds as it should when the key is turned to the “ON” position (first stop when key is turned). I used a spark plug tester today and have flame in all cylinders. The car once (2-3 months ago) turn completely off while running with more than ˝ of gas. Hasn’t happened since then. Any suggestions for the next step in trouble shooting?

thank you, thank you, THANKK YOUUU for finally providing us enough detail, along with what parts you've replaced!!!!! i wish every single thread would look like this!!!

sounds like the only things you haven't checked for is fuel and compression;
fuel: undo the banjo bolt on the rail, turn the key to II and see if fuel is getting to the rail.
compression: rent a compression tester from autozone.

could be the relay or distributor? Happened to me last week. Replaced spark plugs and worked but it was because coolant got over all the plugs from a cracked head. Had bad compression too. Lets hope its your fuel. Have you overheated anytime in the past couple times you've driven it?

Twokexlv6coupe, no thank you for not trying to rip me a new one and for replying in a useful manner. The temperature has been in the normal range at all times. Coolant and oil look as though they should. I will see ASAP about the compression test. My brother mentioned something (Noid Light?) for testing the related fuses to the fuel injection. Thanks for the quick response guys..

Re: 97 Base won't start.. Help please..

You can use a noid light, it will help you determine if there's an electrical problem with wiring/PCM for the fuel injection system.

when you're cranking the car, does it sound the same as before? And is the sound even? For example, if you have bad compression in one cylinder you can hear it while the engine cranks, and it's actually easier for the starter to turn at that point.

If you just did the fuel pump and timing belt, my guess would be the ignition module or PCM...
There could be a restriction in your fuel lines somewhere, or a leak.. have you ruled that out?

Curious - What were you doing when "The car once (2-3 months ago) turn completely off while running with more than ˝ of gas." ?

Re: 97 Base won't start.. Help please..

The car sounds exactly as it did before. The fuel line is next to be ruled out. New fuel filter was replaced but we are going to check it anyway.

What were you doing when "The car once (2-3 months ago) turn completely off while running with more than ˝ of gas." ?

I was cruising doing about 45-50 mph with the cruise control set and my foot was off the gas pedal. Nothing besides normal usage of the car. No BS

Re: 97 Base won't start.. Help please..

Alright guys, it has been determined that my problem is definitely a busted head gasket. Finally had enough time to pull a plug and it was coated with coolant. My water pump was replaced just a couple months ago so that shouldn't be needed. Is this gasket kit on the bottom Product # 4885201 the only gaskets that I should order for a 97 Auto? What is the best way to proceed?

Re: 97 Base won't start.. Help please..

okay.... so you have confirmed headgasket is the problem. I know honda parts are official parts for our cars.... but you can get a cometic headgasket 87mm stock size for h22a and arp head studs. both for about 200-. Now into the reason why the gasket popped... possibly head crack or warpage. Once you remove the head have a machine shop check the head and if it is good mill the surface. Also ...because i have made this mistake before... have the block decked. I know its alot of work but its that extra preventative action that is going to save you money in the long run. good luck w/ this and if we can be any help feel free to ask.... you apparently approached us the right way the first time.

Re: 97 Base won't start.. Help please..

Thanks for the help Bustr. I was just about to post this same question on PP. No need to now, as I have read that Bustr is THE MAN. Is the link that I posted the right kit though? The mechanic (25 yrs experience) that previously worked on the car somehow missed this while he was in there (4-5 months ago) doing timing belt, water pump, etc. A long time friend that's a mechanic is going to do this job for me. He has done previous work for me on different cars. I priced having the head disassembled, tested, and inspected with a very reputable shop. They quoted me a price of $175.00 to do it without parts. What else will be needed to have the block decked? And thanks to all of you for not biting my head off. I've had that experience before.
