Rear Suspension Knocking...

Hi guys,

I'm getting a loud knocking noise from my stock rear suspension on shallow bumps on both sides.... It kinda sounds like noise you expect if they were loose from the top fixings but I know its not!

I've checked the shocks themselves and there is no evidence to suggest they're dead. I've tried hitting the sway bar but it seems pretty solid.

Any ideas of things I can check? Could this be the top mounts or collars? Are there any common issues with worn bushings?

Any help would be appreciated!

Tom

Re: Rear Suspension Knocking...

sounds like your endlinks are worn out, that would be the next thing you should check.

Re: Rear Suspension Knocking...

i have knocking from my rear suspension to over bumps also.

we believe after many tests and research that it is my upper control arms so we are planning to get those replaced within the next few months.

hope this helps.

Re: Rear Suspension Knocking...

could be, just check everything out before you jump into something. the endlinks attach each end of the sway bar to the rear "hub arm"

here's a pic of my custom endlinks for reference, they will be in the same place.

Re: Rear Suspension Knocking...

that shock knock is a common problem. may or may not fix it. for us, you could describe the noise and when it happens till your face turns blue, still there is no way of really knowing where it is coming from what you tell us. you will have to do some troubleshooting yourself. what you could do is jack up the back end of the car by the cross member. place a jack stand on either side of the jack as close as you can where the lower control arm pivots on the cross member. (but not on the LCA) when the car is supported, go to the side you think the sound is coming from and simulate bumps by pushing up on the back wheel quickly and abruptly and repeatedly. it makes it easier if you remove the wheel. if you are able to mimic the sound, feel around on some of the components and joints and try to feel for the noise. usually you can hear the general area where its coming from, but you have to feel for it to pinpoint it. if you can't simulate the noise by doing this, i don't know what to tell you.

if you notice it gets worse when it gets cold, that's indicative of a bushing going bad. if you have a leaking shock, you'd know. i've had one leak on me before. there was fluid all over the place and dirt was collecting everywhere the fluid was.
