Burning Rich

Just got a 5th gen. I'm wondering why is my car burning rich? And why does my car get such bad gas mileage, like 20 miles per gallon, that's worse than some 6 cylinder engines! Anyways the shop made it seem like replacing the O2 sensors would fix it and I would get like 30mpg but I'm only getting like 22 after O2 sensors. I still have got black soot all over my rear bumper where the exhaust comes out. Please help! What do I need to fix or replace to get reasonable gas mileage for a 4 cylinder engine and to not smell gas fumes and have a black soot bumper?

Re: Burning Rich

probably all the carbon build up in your motor, from not driving it hard enough (hitting vtec) etc, maybe a clogged catalytic converter? are there any aftermarket parts on the car? exhaust, etc? you didnt really give enough detail about the problem your having and 20 mpg isnt that bad compared to other cars, the car is supposed to get i think 20 city and 25 maybe higher on the highway mpg. i would also try fuel injection cleaner especially if your not using premium fuel which you should be using hence it says it on the gauge cluster and the car runs like crapp if you use regular, good luck

Re: Burning Rich

Yes they do. It's not uncommon for a completely standard engine to blow a shyteload of black fuel smoke on a hard accelleration run.

And as for your fuel economy, refer any one of the other 7,456,159 threads on the subject on this board...I'm too tired to retype the reasons now.

Re: Burning Rich

I'm keeping it between 2k-3k rpm and not hitting vtec at all and the only time i'm above 3k is on the freeway where i'm in 5th gear at 70mph. Only premium fuel. I just did my sensors. I ran Seafoam last oil change. I've done some searching and some people are saying they're getting almost 30mpg on the freeway! I just want to know what I need to do to get that?

Theres no way people get 30MPG on the freeway on a stock H22. I usually average around 23-25MPG just cruising at 70-75 on the freeway. The last time I've read for a 5th gen is supposed to be a average of 20 city/24 highway.

not to be a dick but your driving a older sports car! so of course your gonna get a lower number then alot of new vehicles. motortrend states 27 highway and 22 city.

plus keep in mind the test they use dont make sense! they dont fill up and divide mile by gallons they use labatory testing. you can read about it here, to better understand what im trying to say:

Re: Burning Rich

Well at least I could get better gas mileage if my car wasn't burning rich enough to coat my rear bumper with black soot. How can I fix that issue?

Re: Burning Rich

Its mostly in the way you drive and you can get a few mods that will help a little i get 32 highway on a long trip usually around 29 though but i have gotten as low as 15 mpg =) thats staying in vtec through half a tank of gas lol but then agian i dont have any black smoke coming out of my car even at very heavy acceleration.

Re: Burning Rich

i dont mean to thread jack so please dont think i am, but im in the same boat my prelude 5th gen is also running very rich, luckily its black so u dont see the soot on the bumper but the exhaust was soooo sooty, what i dont understand is..... sure h22's run rich from the factory but all the mods ive done (same as most of u guys including the guy who started this thread) are mods to get more air in the the engine so wouldnt this lean the mixure out???
also as someone said is there anything we can do, will a piggy back fuel controller fix this and give better mpg and surely performance too?

Re: Burning Rich

The ECU learns and adapts. With a higher end piggyback like a GReddy eManage Ultimate or AEM F/IC you should be able to get a decent tune without the ECU undoing it over time.

Re: Burning Rich

Well they would all be "for off road use only". However you still have the stock ECU, so you would pass there. Some offer multiple tunes, so you could tune it to pass and for maximum power, also being a piggyback, you can always just disconnect and reconnect it.
