Hard Miles

Is it bad to run your car into vtec mode all the time? i know the car is built for vtec but still, running it past 4200 rpms through gears doesnt sount healthy to do all the time. i dont, i was just curious.

Re: Hard Miles

if you are doing that you'll want to check your oil level often because vtec breathes oil. no kidding. i hit vtec a lot and i use about 1 quart of oil per full tank of gas.

Re: Hard Miles

Well it's never GOOD for it but these are tough motors. Just like NFrank said, check your oil often if you like to rip it up :)

Wow, that's a lot of oil. I guess it's a good thing I have the H23 because I couldn't afford all of that oil with gas prices these days, lol.

Re: Hard Miles

i dont burn up that much oil. i do burn up alot though. more than any other car ive driven before at least. i use valvoline syn power 5w-30. ive got to get my oil changed every 3000 on the mark though. also i dont like running vtec to often. i get about 240 miles per tank if i shift around 3000. but if i vtec that tank ill only get around 200. and gas is $3 a gallon right now.

Re: Hard Miles

yeah, when i first got the car i ran full synthetic. psh... that got really really expensive really really fast. now i just run O'rileys cheap 10-30. and i just replace the filter every 3k. no need to drain it, its always running fresh oil.

Not a good idea! I don't have a source anymore, but I have read and heard that it is MORE important to change the oil in engines that use oil... I wish I could remember the rationale... I will look it up quick and let you know if I find anything... cheap oil = you might as well drain it...

Re: Hard Miles

I get 250-270 miles per 11 gal usually hitting vtec a few times per day, almost all interstate miles doing 70-80mph. I have to add a quart b/w oil changes and I use Castrol GTX 5W-30.

Weird though, tank is almost 16gal and the gauge says I'm less than 1/8th of a tank left and I cant get more than 11 gal in when I fill up. I do stop when the pump auto-stops itself the 1st time, as to not overfill, and I guess its good to not let the tank get too close to empty. Does anyone else have this occurrence/issue?

Re: Hard Miles

i hit vtec multiple times per tank. and i think hes right about the 15.9 gallon tank. but im not sure because ive never ran my car completly outta gas. and i always fill up before the light comes on. i usually run my car til im close to bottom line. and put about 12-13 gallons in there.

Re: Hard Miles

the purpose of the motor having vtec is so the car can use its full potential later in the rpm band all while the rest of the time is for just fuel effiency thats why the motor isnt always working to its full potential and then vtec opens it up completely, but i mean yea if you vtec redline it everytime you drive while your driving during that period of time and you feel like breaking shiiitt at some point yea, vtec it 24/7.

Maybe i have an abnormal 4th gen but when i do decide to hit that V power i bury the needle through first and second gear.. I shift them at 8k and i always check my oil and i never lose any.. its actually due for an oil change now, but last i checked it (about a week ago) it had the same amount of oil i put in it when i did the oil change last... odd??

Re: Hard Miles

Tank is 50 litres plus 10 litres reserve. 15.9 gallons is approx 60l, so the full tank including reserve. Warning light comes on before you hit the reserve and 50l is ~ 13.2 gallons so when you fill up that is about what you should be getting.

Personally I hit VTEC a lot. Get probably half the k's I do compared to freeway driving. So somewhere around 300-360 vs. around 600. If there is no one in front of you and you are under the speed limit, how can you not floor it?

Re: Hard Miles

how to determine you gas mileage
1] fill up your tank completely
2] reset the trip counter
3] try to use almost the whole tank to get the best average but you can get your mpg with even half a tank left
4] fill er' up all the way again
5] the pump shows exactly how many gallons you put into the tank so take the number from your trip counter and divide it by the number of gallons you put into the tank and you will have your mpg's

ex: 300mi. / 13gal. = ~23mpg

yup they are. also u may need to check the seal behind the vtec solenoid those could leak aswell.

and dont forget u may also be passing some oil through the exhaust due to mileage or jus wear an tear.

yes, but 1 quart per tank of gas is (more than) a little high... :P

I would actually CHANGE the oil even if it's using a lot...

well it's not good... but as said by the next response it is sure as hell fun! seriously though... in my experience if I do all the routine maintenance and let the car warm up before running it hard it's going to perform well for years (all that redlining keeps my engine clean, lol)... I mean people who don't do oil changes and then bury the needle on cold starts are going to have more problems in the short and long run...

Not really odd... most h22s use some oil, but some use very little... I haven't had to add any between oil changes and I hit vtec at least once every 10 miles, usually through second or third gear. Without tuning 8K shifting is pretty unnecessary. 7500 or a little more should keep you in vtec when you shift (7200 keeps me there, but I am tuned to crossover at 4800), and by 8000 our poor little mostly stock h22s are all outta power... looking at the powerband will kinda tell you that:

I think the fuel mileage thing is more true with newer iVtec... h22 vtec was basically a way of making the h23 squeeze out more power at the high end, not get better mpgs... No one cared about saving gas in the early 90s, right? Not in the US anyway. **** was like 89 cents a gallon... They could barely give away the CRX HF.
