Icon9 5G prelude blown engine.... need advice

so the story goes like this... travelling up the jersey turnpike i blew the engine on my '01 'lude. i like to say that i miss shifted and hit 2nd instead or 4th but anyway it's my fault. I noticed redline, black smoke out the back, and an instant loss of power... needless to say the car died . got towed off and the guys that pulled me said that it sounded like the timing belt had gone south...ok i suppose just snapping the timing belt isnt that bad .... got pulled over to a nearby garage from the insurance tow truck and found that i had to wait until morning....finally morning comes on april 4th....OH $#!T, its F***ING EASTER... well, had the owner of the place not stopped by i think i would have been there all day... At this point i was educated to find that i ( as other prelude owners might already know) own an interference motor.... meaning that if the timing belt goes at high speeds ( jersey turnpike @ ~ 85 MPH), the engine is toast... well, 72 hrs of frustration and $400 USD of self towing later i am left with a $5K paper weight that i have sitting in my drive way of the place i rent.

so my options really are either re-build or swap out.... any advice on how to make the most of this and to minimize losses while staying on a budget??

I'm debating the same thing right now (though my reason isn't as... serious or immediate as yours)

here's a link to my thread if you'd like

Hmm what to do... rebuild or swap or (were asking the same question, some of their answers might help)

IF your timing belt snapped, then most likely bent valves.

Sounds about exactly what happened to my prelude on Easter Sunday, coincidence I think not, and now we are both with paper weights. Skip the rebuild as soon as i can afford it i'm going for the F20B, mine is an SH and i will need a new tranny too. I wanted the prelude because of it's looks and now I can say I will do my best to not put an H22 in my car. Iron block sounds more secure to me.

Re: 5G prelude blown engine.... need advice

I'll offer the same advice I offered firebos mate; if you plan on keeping the car a short time, swap in a new motor, easiest way will be another H22 from a base Prelude. If you plan on keeping it for a while, a rebuld might be worth it, especially if you eventually plan on making some bigger power.

It all comes down to what you want to do, both now and in the future.

Re: 5G prelude blown engine.... need advice

yeah if you got a base model you can get any almost any h22 you want but the f20b is cheaper, i know people are concerned about buying a F20b and getting the auto version but saving money is important too. The difference between the f20 auto and manual is the cams and throttlebody which you can reuse from your blown h22.

Re: 5G prelude blown engine.... need advice

A swap will be cheaper, a rebuild will be better.
