My 98 Won't start.

Hey guys I've searched on this forum and couldn't get any info so I hope this isn't an old re-post of someone else but my car won't start. Battery/starter/alternator's all good. It even cranks. But I can't get the engine to stay on. I know I have a check-engine light on to clean out my EGR. Could that be the cause? I also know I need to replace a release bearing but I don't think it has to do anything with the tranny.

While I'm on here I might as well ask another question. It overheated a while ago. Reservoire was full. Hoses were not leaking anywhere, completely dry. Nothing visible was leaking under the car everything seemed completely dry. I topped it up with water for the time being in radiator but I gotta top it up everyday now. With no visible leaks anywhere. Fan's working too. COuld it be the radiator? Waterpump and timing belt were done a month ago so I know it couldn't be the pump.

How can you check if you need a new head gasket or rings? Will the compression test tell me? There is oil in the car, it dries up every couple weeks or so, so I top it up. I'm actually taking my car in to get a valve adjustment. Should I get a new head gasket while I'm at it? I think they gotta take the head off in order to adjust the valves? How much is a head gasket anyway?

fuel is full. spark is a good question. How can I check if my sparkplugs are all firing when the engine won't start?

Re: My 98 Won't start.

i take one plug out at a time hook the wire up and watch the plug. U'll see the spark. if u do a compession test it should build pressure and hold. If ur burning that much oil i would bet that rings are shot. just the valve cover has to adjust the valves. Ur mechanice should do a leak down test. And compression check. Do u hear the fuel pump come on when u turn the key to the 2 postion?

Thanks, I'm going to check the plugs when I get home. What does the fuel pump sound like when I turn the key? Aw man, I really hope it's not my rings. How much did you have to pay to get your piston rings replaced?

Re: My 98 Won't start.

I did it my self, so like 20 bucks for the rings. I have no idea how much that would be. Find a good machine shop. U hear the pump behind the rear seat it sounds like a electic motor. I hope its not rings too, It does sound like u have a major problem though. I hear ya i blown my motor up like twice.

Re: My 98 Won't start.

Long shot here but you stated your EGR is causing a CEL ever consider it may be stuck open causing a choke out? I would try cleaning it before getting carried away and see if it remedies your problem.

As for a valve adjustment no it does not require removal of your head simply removal of your valve cover. If your radiator cap doesn't seal properly it will allow your coolant to boil and release as steam try replacing it.

h series motors are notorious for burning oil try to gauge how much you burn weekly and let us know your results.

Re: My 98 Won't start.

thanks for your input. I will clean out my EGR before I do anything else. I got my car towed to my mechanic. I was gonna drive it there to replace a release bearing but he'll look into the starting problem as well. He said he'll clean out the egr for me too since he's done them many times working at Honda. I really hope its just something small from not starting and overheating. If this fix is gonna cost me a lot this ludes gonna go =(

When I first got hold of my prelude it overheated twice and made a 4 mile run to the closest shoulder. Upper radiator hose blew out first and then my water pump fried and leaked into my timing cover. Both times it was at a point where my motor would barely run on its own and smoke poured out of my bay. My head gasket and head did not warp or blow during either occasion, our motors can take quite a beating ON OCCASION.

Hey i didnt read through all this but i was having the same problem with my 93 lude i had to replace the main relay under the front dash.... thats probably why your not getting any fuel... that or your fuel pump is out

Re: My 98 Won't start.

I'm hoping my engine's still good! I checked the hear the fuel pump like BRSoll1484 told me and i can hear it in the back. So I'm hoping its the relay or distributor... But the thing that worries me is why it could be overheating....as well as it burns enough oil to have the engine dry in 2 weeks. It's literally at the top mark and 2 weeks later its below the bottom mark. No leaks under the engine.

Re: My 98 Won't start.

my mechanic just told me he got it started. It was the spark plugs and he said it needs a tune up but he also said my head was gone and I needed a new one. I knew there was a knocking sound in the head but I didn't know it would cause damage. Now that I'm paying to get a tune up, a new head, and release bearing. I'm wondering if I should just do a swap. Should I go for it? My other option is to get new sparkplugs and drive it for a bit and sell it.

Re: My 98 Won't start.

a new HEAD?????? Something in the valve train might be screwed up. I had and entire valve explode into pieces. U might be looking at some work. Have him do the tune up, that shouldnt be more than plugs and fluids and what not. Changing the whole "head" out is a large job. And like 500-1000 dollars just for it. U might be getting taken for a ride ya know? Can you elaborate more????????

Re: My 98 Won't start.

He said he doesn't quite know what's causing all the overheating or the massage amounts of oil burning but he did said I needed a new head. I found used heads online for about 200 and my mechanic told me the labour alone is about 250-300. Plus I probably need a new head gasket. But yeah, heard it was a lot of work. Almost $1000 if I want a new release bearing too. Thats why I was thinking maybe buy a new h22a for 1000 bucks and 600 labor for swap and release. that way i won't have to deal with the overheating and burning oil anymore.

my cars got 196,000 km on it so thats around 122, 000 miles?

Re: My 98 Won't start.

huh, if ur burning oil, my guess is its in the bottom end. So a whole motor might be the way to go. IDK km?? where do u live? Ur gonna have to do some thinking!!!! Do u like the car? They are sweet, but i hear ya its almost not worth it when you get frustrated! When i can drive again i want to get a daily driver and make the lude just a toy! I'm thinking Q45. Infiniti, they're gettin cheaper now. I'll keep an ear out for ya! Did he do any form of leak down or compression test? That'll tell ya. google it.

Re: My 98 Won't start.

How much does it cost to do a leak down and compression test? Well the price difference between going with my original motor and trying to get everything fixed is about $1000 all in. But if I get a brand new motor with all my problem fixed its about $1650 all in. Man, you could find a decent civic or protege for those prices!

Yeah go for it, my moms got a 05' g35x not a single problem yet just oil changes.

But If i DO spend the 1650...with the price i paid for my car plus 1650 I could have bought a better car. Frustrated? Yes. But I'm not going to let it get to me.,

Re: My 98 Won't start.

I dont know how much it is for a mechanic to do it. Did u look up the idea of those tests? Basically what i have is a hose that threads into where the spark plug comes out, screw that in. Disconnect all the plug wires. (take one plug out at a time) There's a gauge that connects to the hose, crank the motor with the starter for like 5 seconds or so, and read what the gauge says. This will give u a good idea of how ur rings are. Also it should hold the pressure when u stop. If u have a valve thats busted or head gasket that blown or bad rings u'll find it. A leak down u take the same hose connect an air compressor to the hose and the air will travel through ur problem. U might have a shotty head gasket. Is there oil in the radiator or in the coolant? That might be some problems. Either way i think the whole top of the motor has to come off. kinda scary but u can start building it up now!!!!!!! I'm no expert by any means but ive had my lude for 8 years and seen two rebuilds. Mostly cause of electrical problems. The last thing that got me was my fans crapped out in the middle of summer, i drove from RI to CT which is like 100 miles home like that, boom blew the rings as soon as i got on my street. oh man what alot of smoke. I was stupid, but as long as i didnt stop the car temp was low, then id stop and temp would go way too high. oh my bad im getting off topic!!!!!! lol. Well look into some things u have a fixable problem!
