Can't get my 97 to start. Any suggestions ?

A few days ago I noticed that my car would start real fast when I turned the key in the ignition, almost immediately with no hesitation. Of course I payed it no mind. Today left the house to get some lunch and it won't start. I didn't leave the lights on and the radio and all interior lights come on but it doesn't even crank as if its trying to start. Any suggestions before I drop some money on a tow truck and a mechanic for something I may be able to diy

first of all, does the radio work when the key is turned to II? or the dash lights when turned to III?

if it was starting faster than normal and now not starting at all, I would point the finger toward the starter or altenator. soooooooooooooooo check em out

Your first action should obviously be the cheapest! AKA check the battery! Then work your way from there (alternator, ignition). Good luck!

not if a failing part is causing the battery to drain or die...

Re: Can't get my 97 to start. Any suggestions ?

If the battery is dead, charge it. IF it drains again, then you continue to look for a problem that could drain the battery. Sorry, I didn't think I had to specify with common knowledge like that...

Didn't think i should jump the car since the battery isnt really dead but will try. I figured it may be the starter but was hoping it was maybe just a fuse or something simple

Re: Can't get my 97 to start. Any suggestions ?

yea you could try hitting the starter with a hammer, sometimes it gets "stuck".

or to tell if your starter is going bad, undo the connectors @ the dizzy, then crank the car. if it still cranks fast like normal, starter is fine. but if it cranks slowwwwwww, starter is bad.

I was too late but from the beginning I was gonna say I would put all my money on guessing it was the starter. Glad you got it fixed.
