New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

Hi, new to the forum and looking for some advice on body/exterior. I have owned my 2000 prelude for 2 years now and really enjoy it. I use it as a daily driver and don't plan on doing any engine work or racing it. Here are a few pics:

I was thinking it was time for a new car and I looked at a couple altimas, accords, and whatnot and decided that my prelude is a lot cooler than anything I want as a DD and why not give it a complete makeover. I've decided on a 3 stage pearl white color, with new rims, new headlights, and lowered. Here are some examples I found on this site:

(Thank you to the owners of these cars for inspiration)

Now my questions are, what suggestions or advice would you give before starting and doing this project. Ive talked to three different body shops: a guy working in a small garage, a business usually working on collisions, and a professional full fledged body shop. Their prices respectively have been 1500, 3000, and 6000. This isn't by any means a show car but I still want it to look good and not peel in 2 years. What advice would you give on painting the car? I would also appreciate any suggestions on headlights, foglights, wheels, and lowering the car, but I can use the search option later on when I get some time. Price isn't much of an option, but id rather keep it under 5000 altogether if I can. Thanks for reading this thread and for any other suggestions you can offer (lip, wing, etc).

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

I was told by a few shops that you will not get a good paint job for under 3000 dollars. I was told if I was to paint it for under that it would probably look worse than it already does (not too bad at all). I have no idea about the other stuff but hope this helps a little bit. I think your paint looks fine btw. Maybe just start modding it?

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

If your budget is 5000 for paint then you should be fine. When doing a color change the cost of getting a paint job goes up because then you have to paint the door jams and engine bay (well, you don't technically have to but it would look ugly otherwise in my opinion). I've personally seen first-hand what it takes to do a paint job the RIGHT way. It's no joke, so don't cheap out on it. Find a paint shop that you know does really good work and get it done there. Personally, I kind of like the green look, you don't see too many green ones, at least I don't.

If I were you I would wait a while before you go changing the color and maybe just focus on things like lowering it, getting new headlights, and new wheels. At least until you know for sure what you want and have enough money for it. But that's just my two cents. Do with it what you please.

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

Thanks for the advice. I think Im just sick of green after a few years and need a change. And i know modding is fun, but I want to keep this car as reliable and stock as possible. Im planning on purchasing a c6 or z06 (have to work out fund issues before I know which one) sometime in the next couple weeks that will be more of my project, weekend driver car.

For lowering the car, how much should I look at putting away if again Im doing this just for the look at not so much performance and handling? What are some good sites/links that offer quality headlights and foglights (I prefer not to go with cheap ebay replicas). Sorry Im pretty new to the modding aspect of this car. I owned a stealth TT back in the day that I threw so much money in, and I know all the best companies and sites for those, but Im starting all over again here :)

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

Here's a link to a thread with some good suggestions: Coil-overs

I can't find the thread that talked about these but I remember some of the members saying that Function and Form coil-overs are good if you're looking to keep a lot of the comfort of stock suspension but still have a drop. Anyways, here's the link to their site: Function & Form

As far as price... if you have anywhere form $600-$1000 or so for suspension then I would think you should be fine, unless you're including new wheels and tires in that budget, then it would be higher.

I'm not a 5th gen guy. I own a 3rd gen . So as far as advice, prices, and links for 5th gen stuff, I'm not sure I can really help on that. You can just look around here as there is some really good information on that stuff. The search function is your friend . Hope I helped some.

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

man do i love that green on 5G's! those gold (volk's?? i think?) on your car with a slight drop would look BANGINN!!

but i totally know what you mean getting sick of the color after owning it for a coupla years.

if you wanna lower it mainly for looks and not so much performance, i would say you'll be fine with a nice spring/shock combo, there's no real need for the adjustability of coilovers. and to keep it a DD, a nice 1.5" drop will suffice. something like H&R or Neuspeed sport springs, with like koni or KYB shocks.

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

I'm with BMX on this one

green isn't too common

I'd also suggest possible the SE/SH stock wheels if you like the looks of them (the kind on the car in my sig)

Re: New Member - Need advice/suggestions on exterior

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely do a bit of searching when I get some free time and try to get comfortable with some of the topics. Ill look into springs and shocks vs coilovers and try to find some companies that sell top line jdm lights.

As for leaving my car green... no offense to those you like it or own it, but I hate green on cars. Just my thing. The only reason I bought this car was because I needed a reliable, sporty, good lucking car that had been taken care of. Most used preludes out there have been driven by young kids who beat them up. I love my car, I want to keep it, but in order for me to do that I must change the color.
