Oil seals, water pump, TSB's etc. A bunch of questions.

Well I got a 2000 Lude with 140K and it has developed a new leak coming from right above the water pump. I'm thinking it it's probably the cam shaft seals, but while I'm in there I want to replace the forward balancer shaft seal, front crank shaft seal, rear balancer gear case o ring along with the camshaft o rings, timing belt etc.

Doing a bit of research and getting a list of parts together, but came up with more questions. Here they go.

1st:
Can I change the front balancer and crank shaft seals without taking the whole oil pump case off? (To get to the oil pump case the oil pan and lower exhaust manifold have to come off...)

2nd:
I've had my timing belt, water pump, tensioner changed at 90K. Coolant at 124K. Should I change the water pump again? It's got 50K and the coolant, well it's not that old. How long do the water pumps last?

3rd:
Well it seems that on some Hondas theres a tendency for the front balancer seal to pop out. There's a TSB to install a retaining plate to hold the seal in place. P/N 06923-P0A-306
http://www.hondalac.com/service/Bulletins/x00-073e.pdf The helms shows some short of retainer for the front balancer. So I guess this does not apply to the 5th gen Preludes or they already have some short of retainer installed?

Thanks
Dragos

Water pumps on any car are notoriously fickle. Some last forever, some die early. The rationale behind changing the water pump with every timing belt change is nothing more than saving the labor of taking everything apart again if the pump fails. If you think it's in good shape, leave it be until you do the timing belt.

Right. From '96 onwards, the retainer was installed on the assembly line. The problem actually affects the earlier 4th gens as well -- Honda ducked putting those on the TSB because it was connected to a recall action.

you can def take both seals out without taking the whole oil pump off without a doubt.

but putting them back on, your gonna need the seal drivers that are mentioned in the FSM, which MIGHTTTTTTTT be sold at auto stores and/or honda.

previous versions of this Honda tsb should be discarded. Changing out the valve seals without taking off the heads is the problem. You just need to install the new seal plate on the metal cowl panel.
