alright what's with the 5 gen compression belt?

So I have a prelude 98 sh. the compression alternator belt is squeeling like a banshee. I'm hearing different things like how its a self tightener? But then I here no, it can be tightened. SO I tried screwing with the two front size ten bolts that losen the alternator (broke my socket and had to stop here), and then go for the bracket where it goes from the engine block to the alternator? and then tighten the two front bolts up in front. This would tighten up the belt right?
Lemme know if I should continue or just replace the belt.

Re: alright what's with the 5 gen compression belt?

you def can adjust the tension yourself.

it helps to loosen the top 12/14mm long bolt that the alternator pivots around first.
then once that's a lil loose (2-3 rotations) to tighten the belt, you tighten the front 10mm bolt (aka, clockwise) but you only the long bolt that goes underneath the alternator. NOT the one next to it which simply bolts the adjustment nut down to the bracket.

at least this is for a 4G, and i would imagine a 5G would be nearly the same, if not identical.

Re: alright what's with the 5 gen compression belt?

Yea....it's the bolt underneath the alt that you would have to slightly loosen up to allow the alt to swing up and down.

Wha was done to my alt was once you have the alt swinging to get a long crow bar if you have and wedge it btwn where the alt is attached to the bracket to apply pressure and force the alt to move upwards. Once you have that then have someone tighten up the bolt underneath and that should apply enough pressure onto the belt and keeping it from wobbling and ur alt from squeaking!!!

If you dont have a long crow bar then have a friend apply some force to lift the alt upwards while you tighten the bolt underneath and you should be good with that!!!
