Humming noise. Hoping one of you may know the source.
I pulled outta the gas station (this didn't happen before I pulled in) after putting in a half tank and got going 45mph, the driver side in the back started humming quite loud to where I could hear it over my radio playing. I got home and filled the tires to 41PSI (checked the gas tank lid for common sense) and it was still there. I checked the rotors/brakes and nothing was rubbing. Does anyone have a clue where this could be coming from? I don't really know the right word to describe the noise, but humming is pretty close.
Does a 98 have grease spots? I have a day off tomorrow so hopefully I can get my belly under this car haha. Tight fit compared to my old car. EDIT!!: Wheel bearing.. Anyone agree? haha kinda answered my own question. Last edited by Easyxxz; 03-15-2010 at 10:38 PM. |

Re: Humming noise. Hoping one of you may know the source.
your fuel pump hums when its working properly. stock FP's usually aren't too loud, aftermarket walbro's are a tad louder, but not so loud where you can hear it over your music.
the FP is located on top of the gas tank, behind the rear seats, under the seat backs. when your car is running, peak your head in the trunk and see if its the FP.

Re: Humming noise. Hoping one of you may know the source.
Yeah, that was my guess. It does get louder as i speed up.
I went to my trusted shop today thinking he'll just be like oh its just a bearing so no big deal right? "Well, for a prelude yer looking at about 350$" My response. "For all four?" hahahaha you can guess what he said and I walked the hell outta there. 100$ is do-able i suppose. I really wanted to get my windows tinted but it seems like every time I actually think about getting it done something goes wrong. |

I think the part is 75 to 100 if you can do it yourself.

Re: Humming noise. Hoping one of you may know the source.
Had both of my rear wheel bearing go at different times and each time i had that humming noise that progressively got worse with speed/time. Good news is that, i ran it for prolly 2-3 months with it cuz i didn't have the time to swap it out. Bad news is the casing housing the bearings was pretty much fused/siezed onto the spindle. If you run into it, i ended up grinding the casing down, and cranking at it with a oversized monkey wrench till it snapped. Sanded the spindle down a bit, and reassembly was a joke.

Well its been a week and two days and I'm pretty sure that its the wheel bearing and that's without even looking at it closely haha. I just have to get my ass to order one now and get everything out to do it.

Re: Humming noise. Hoping one of you may know the source.
Might want to consider replacing both sides. The other failed prolly within 6-9 months of the first for mine, and it'll be a hell of a lot easier to swap out if it comes out in one piece!
