Maintenance Required

Hey yea i have a 98 prelude base and the maintanance required box under the speedometer is turning from green to yellow. is this just a general maintance reminder or does it mean something is wrong with my car? it has about 157,000 miles and about 6,000 miles ago (same time i got the car) i changed tha timing belt and did general preventive maintance stuff.

Re: Maintenance Required

Its just a reminder you can stick your key in this little lever on the cluster and it will change the box back to green.

Re: Maintenance Required

I can't remember how may miles it is, but after X amount of time of it not being reset it will change. I want to say either 6,000 miles or 10,000. Basically its there for those grocery getters who can't keep track of their oil changes, its insulting to me really... lol. For me I just reset it whenever I have my cluster out (damned jdm cluster bezel not having the key cutout...) As long as you KNOW you're keeping up with your maintenance, don't worry about it.

When I installed my JDM carbon fiber gauge bezel i just transferred mine from my USDM bezel.

The Maintenance required switches from green to amber at 7,000mi. (which is Honda's recommended interval for oil changes), and switches to red at 10,000mi. if not reset.

It is a general reminder, but sometimes people just stick their key in there to reset it and forget about it, but you have done the one maintenance thing that hondas are notrious for about every 80K. I would also consider other things like bleed your brake lines and get new fluid in there that is a maintenance thing that I think no one does. Flushing the radiator, tune up, check slave cylinder for leaks. brakes, rotors, alignment. Ah the list goes on and on. Get that thing on a lift and inspect the exhaust. I just replaced mine front to back ah man what a difference. Anyhow sounds like you got it covered though enjoy the ride I know I do.

Honda does NOT recommend you to change your oil at 7000 mile intervals!! Show me where Honda says that about cars built in the 90's. I know Toyota recommends 5000 miles on there newer cars, and I know BMWs and Benz tell you you dont have to change it for almost 15,000 miles. But 7000 for a Honda is a little high. I do mine every 3000 miles on the dot, but thats just me. Thats how Ive gotten 3 Hondas Ive owned to well over 250,000 miles and still run like a top. The motors all outlasted the bodys that started rotting out.

mine gets it every 3K or every three months which ever comes first. I finally just broke 11K miles that I personally put on the car and I think that I have changed the oil about 10 times already, plus run Z max every six months. Don't drive this car that much.

Exactly, That is out of a second party Helms aftermarket repair manual. If you look at a service manual made Honda Motor Corp it will not recommend changing your oil 7500 mile intervals. Plus that page you printed does not say Honda or Prelude any where on it. Plus our cars take 5qts of oil, not 4.5. {never mind, I didnt see where it says 4.8 with filter} Plus it says "normal conditions" if you look up there definition of normal driving conditions it consists of driving in no dust or dirt, or rain, or snow or temps only above 65 and below 90. Pretty much nobody drives under there definition of normal conditions except for 85 year old ladies that drive to bingo and the supermarket and thats it. I doubt any of us qualify for driving under those conditions. If you also look it says 7500 miles or 12 MONTHS. You can wait a whole year between oil changes on YOUR car if you want. I'm not going to do that to my motor!! She likes fresh oil every 3k, so thats what I give er. (plus H22's are notorious for burning oil........if you wait a whole year or 7500 miles........you will be lucky if you even have any oil left in the oil pan when you go to drain it.) Do what you want, but I much rather be safe than sorry.

Re: Maintenance Required

i change my oil every 5000-6000 miles. add oil as needed. royal purple 5w-30.
out of a second party aftermarket repair manual? its the helms manual. if you want to discredit what it says about oil and lubrication then why not just discredit the whole thing? and no, it does not say honda or prelude. but if you care to look it up its chapter 8 page 6. im not going to sit here and argue with you about it over the internet but if you really care to know, it means, 7500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. so please, dont be a tool. my post was in good humor.
