Icon8 Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

I hope this thread is in the right spot. I am new to forums, and am not sure exactly how to navigate them.
I hav a 5th gen (1999) 'lude with an auto tranny thats on its way out, (surging at low rpms, slippin' into first, etc.) I got a great deal on the car, 3750$, four months ago, and now I know why. The engine, 2.2L DOHC VTEC, is tip-top. Had a vacuum leak, and had to get the egr ports cleand, but 350$ later and she screams. Only prob is the bleepin 4 speed auto, which thanx to preludezone, I now know they have lots of probs.
My question is, is it worth it to spend 1500$ or so to get it rebuilt. I understand that I should get a 5 speed swap done, so dont snarl at me for buying an auto... I know now. I dont have a lot of $ right now, but if I can get 30k - 50k out of a rebuilt tranny, then I could have the money for a manual swap before it goes out again. Lemme know what you guys think.
Thanks...

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

from what i've read, not many transmission shops know how to rebuild them properly.... and it's not the trans itself, it's the converter that messes everything up.

my trans is on its way out, takes forever to shift out of 1st, all shifts are pretty delayed and hard. gathering all the parts for a 5 speed so i'm ready when it blows

i'm sure others will chime in

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

nope use the 1500 for parts of a 5spd and do it your self otherwise ur looking at 1500 for parts the cheapest with labor like 600-800. there are write ups online around how to DIY and it can take from 6-10 hours depends how mechanically incline you are and if you have the proper tools.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Or sell you Auto, take the money from that and add your $1500 and buy a 5sp 1999 Prelude. There you go problem solved.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Do the 5spd swap, I did it and it was best thing for my prelude. Runs smoother with the transmission. Purchase only require parts.

transmission H or F series
reverse switch (probably on the transmission)
clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing ( just get a new kit)
flywheel
pedals
shift cables
shift housing
shift boot, and knob
half shaft
5 spd starter from f series or h series motors
master and slave cylinder
all clutch lines or ( one long steel braided hose)
clutch fluid reservoir
5spd ECU ( I just modded my auto ecu)
cluster (optional)

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Just cutiou what you paid for labor. Im told to expect 800 to 1000. Also, did you have to install steel plates to either side of the firewall for the clotch pedal? One guy said he was having trouble with shifting till he went back and did that. Only heard of that from one person.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

you can use washers for that its between the pedal and the firewall

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Well that is correct the firewall it self is different from the auto and 5spd models. unlike the civics which have the same firewalls for both 5spd and auto where the floor holes for the clutch pedal is plugged with rubber seals. Washers would work. I read about issues myself but wanted to see for myself.

I heard of someone using washers but i have it bolted straight to the floor np for the time being. Had the swap done for 6 months alrdy. I got lazy with trying to come up with a way to do that incase i have future problems. Mine is bolted straight to the floor at the moment no problems with shifting. I had someone help me with it so labor cost doesnt take account here.

It would cost you about $1000 for a shop to do it when i quoted it. This swap is a hard without a lift.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

also if you do it your self this is a must!!! YOU HAVE TO DRILL A HOLE IN THE FIREWALL TO BOLT THE PEDEL ON TOP!! otherwise your pedal will break off and hit the floor, i forgot to do that when i did my swap a month later hit the floor driving and neutraled out on the highway very dangerous!!!! but fixed it and problem was solved.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

So there is a hole for it on the pedal assembly but not in the firewall? Decided not to do t myself but will pass this on to my mechanic. Thanks for the intel. War.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

yeah the pedals have the hole but they have to drill two holes for the pedal to let the pedal work with the clutch and then the top of the pedal to hold it, ok just makes sure ur mech does it right

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Also Note that if u get a 5spd ecu you need to reprogram the immobilizer to work with your key. you can run with the auto ecu but you get a CEL for the transmission. I can be an issue depending on your states inspection requirements.

Yea thats the best way to go, Auto ECU with some soldering work. took me 5 mins. I read about idle issues but nothings wrong with mine. Some people might not like to work with cars ECU

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

Is the soldering you speak of on the actual circuit or just the wiring going to the chip? I think I read that if you have the red key to the car that a stealership can reprog the auto ecu to work with a 5spd. Would this eliminate my need for soldering, and would I need to do this before I drive it with the new manual tranny? I am not sure I trust myself to solder a chip, and would rather not spend the 80 dollars on a 5spd ecu if I can salvage my auto ecu.

Re: Worth an auto tranny rebuild?

your better off soldering and its true about the red key but saves you money if you just solder its not that hard, take like 5 min and is on the actual circut inside the ecu.
