Holy Crap!!!!

Ok, so my lude has been acting up for a while(tranny slipping, not idling right, and electrical issue). So I bit the bullet and paid the local Honda dealer to look at it. Today, they called me and told me that I would need a new tranny(I knew that), but they also told me that my car has been drawing condensation in the floorboard and has shorted out my PCM. My idle is somehow affected by this and the fast idle valve is bad. So, I need some of your help finding out how to get my hands on these two pieces as cheap as possible. I also am wondering what everyone knows about this guy on ebay that sells the trannies? Are they good? Has anyone bought one from him? I need to get this thing fixed for my wife, for cheap and fast. Please help folks. Thanks

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

I'm skeptical about buying a tranny from Ebay bc you cant see it physically to determine if it's good or not. I would suggest Craigs or if on Ebay to find one within your area and email them that you wanna check it out in person and drag someone with automotive knowledge to inspect it bc getting a tranny done isnt cheap nor a joke to waste money on doing/getting the wrong thing.

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

This is true. Thanks for bringing that up. For those who are reading my post, I am a newb, but I just read the FINAL idle problem thread and will try that before anything else. I am not sure now(replaying the conversation back in my head if he said ecu or pcm), I know he did say it was in the back floorboard. Any help of what this module is called would be great too. Thanks

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

ECU- engine control unit. PCM- powertrain control module. usually used synonymously, our cars also have a TCM(transmission control module), both located under passenger side carpet on a 5th gen(no experience with a 4th gen so can't speak for them) i STRONGLY recommend searching on here and performing some more diagnostics before throwing a new computer in.

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

Thanks, I just picked up my car from the shop. I opted to bring it home and see about cleaning the fast idle vavle out myself and checking out the pcm to see if it is really bad or they were just trying to give me the shaft. There estimate for a new tranny and labor was $3359. OUCH! If anyone has a tiptronic tranny laying around, pm me please. I need one immediately. I am in the 74338 zip.

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

By the way, when you type pcm into ebay, it brings up several items, but they all are titled ECU ECM PCM? Whats up with that? There not all the same are they?

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

ecu- engine control unit
ecm- engine control module
pcm- powertrain control module

all pretty much synonymous

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

Ok, not trying to sound like a jerk, I am just really new to the preludes. I understand they all work in conjunction with one another, but are they all the same box? or are there three different boxes?

Thanks

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

dude i just told you they are synonymous.

they are basically different terms for the same thing; the car's computer that controls all of its functions

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

aalverez3,
Dude, I am sorry if I sound like an idiot or am pissing you off, I just don't know about these things. The only was I was taught to find stuff out was to ask. And I have a complex about making things clear because of past history. So, I was just trying to clarify everything, didn't mean any hard feelings or anything like that. We all love our preludes and are here to help one another, i think.

Re: Holy Crap!!!!

It's ok. I have found out ALOT of stuff while in my adventure for a new tranny. I searched out that "rompirates 5spd swap" and found out a crap load of data. He even has a link that tells a person how to make an automatic ecu into a 5spd, and it looks and sounds very simple. Thanks though.

Here is the link to his swap:
