Tune up question.

I was recently quoted 800.00$ for a complete tune-up job. The job is going to include the timing belt, balancer shaft belt, water pump, auto tensioner, thermostat, as well as a valve adjustment. My question is, is this a good deal? I have a 97' base with 181,000 miles on it, and i can hear some valve chatter. Any feedback would be awesome.

Re: Tune up question.

thats around the average cost for that job. ask them if they're gonna do seals too; front main, balancer shaft, and maybe cam seals.

Re: Tune up question.

If you want to get really crazy, you could have the crank knifed and balanced, then get rid of the balance shaft all together!
Seriously tho, I'm going to mention it a third time, manual tensioner!!! I hadn't done enough research before doing the same tune-up on my lude and put a new auto-tensioner in it...
If you have the time, patience, and are confident in your mechanical aptitude, the job is really not difficult, and I would estimate you saving around $400+ I would consider letting the shop adjust your valves if you have never done it before.

Re: Tune up question.

knifing the crankshaft is completely pointless in these engines just so you know

Re: Tune up question.

Nice, i will check out that manual tensioner conversion. I have used them for everything else and the do great engine work. They are going to be replacing all the seals mentioned as far as i know, of course i will make sure of that. I really appreciate the feedback. I know they engine will run smoother but will i see any difference in power?

Thats a great deal, I paid $800 just for the parts and labor for the timing belt job minus the valve adjustment and thermostat

Re: Tune up question.

$800 is bout average of what I paid for mine from a reliable mech, but knowing and getting a hook up deal from another /better mech is always the way to go!!! Wish I knew Bustr back then so I'd save myself mad $$$!!!-HAHAHAHA

BTW...like they all said. If you're gonna have your motor worked on to get the manual tensioner done!!! It makes a diff.
