should i be concerned?

after reading all the pages on the intake thread, were most of it was just ppl biching at each other as to whats better, unfortunately for me i couldnt find much help. so i was wondering, if anyone else here has an AEM cold air intake like me. my concern, is that today was the first day i drove my lude in the rain with the cai. i dont have a bypass valve. anyway, if u have one, then u already know this but the hole that the intake goes through had to be made bigger for the inlet pipe to fit. today after i got home from work i saw that there was a few drops of water on the pipe above the hole and a little water puddle around it by the battery. i have fender liners that protect the filter, but im guessing the water is getting through. not much, but enough to raise my concern. is this something i should be worrying about or is this no big deal?

Re: should i be concerned?

i would be concerned. you don't want any water to get into your intake... you will ruin your motor. so you cut your intake to make a spot for the bypass valve right??? well what i would do.... buy another air filter. when the weather is nice use your cai normal... meaning have a coupler to mate the two cut ends where your bypass would go. if it is nasty out. disconnect the couple where the bypass would go and put your new air filter on the tube that is still connected to the throttlebody. move your other pipe slighty and make someway to secure it so it doesn't rattle around. this will make a ram air intake or short ram...then you will have nothing to worry about. one intake for nasty weather the other for nice weather.

Re: should i be concerned?

lol thats hella work to do every time the weather changes. i heard that hydrolock wont happen unless about half the intake is submerged in water. cuz alot of ppl give me advice n stuff saying things like "oh dont wry about it, a CAI will be fine without a bypass valve cuz i live in california" and etc... even the guy from the performance store i bought it from told me that. im trying to find a person on this site who like me has an AEM cai. cuz imo, having something and talking about it, and talking about something you dont have are totally different. (not trying to sound rude or ungrateful to you guys. thanks for the opinions btw). the way i think the water gets in is not because of puddles, but when i drive water thats on the tire splashes against my splash guard (fender liner) and some of that water gets through. not alot, as far as i can see...wat if i was to buy one of those splash shields that go on the air filter? since i dont live around huge puddles, and i avoid even small puddles when i see them, do you guys think that will be good enough?

Re: should i be concerned?

i wouldnt be worried. the water could be coming from some other spot. it would take far too much to push water up through the wheel liner, and the hole the tube goes from. my bet is that its runoff from the hood or something

Re: should i be concerned?

dont be too worried, it is bad for water to get in it, just be carefull when hitting puddles and driving in the rain...

Re: should i be concerned?

ya i wouldnt worry about it, your'd have to get the filter it self IIRC almost completely submerged. a few drops of water isnt going to hurt anything, specially if the engine is already up to or around operating temp any way.

Re: should i be concerned?

CAI is the way to go, better for N/A motors in general. Unless you completely submerger the filter of a CAI in water you should not hydrolock, example for my car i have to submerge the car halfway up the door panel to completely cover the filter in water. Even if the filter is half submerged it should take the air from the dry half and bring the dry air through the intake.
