Lowering

Soooo ive searched around and all the threads that talk about lowering have a lot of words that i dont know what they mean. Im pretty close to clueless on what it takes to do a drop so i was wondering if someone could break everything down for me real simple. What all you need to do a drop and what each part actually does, what height you think is perfect for our ludes, what parts you could/should get but dont really need, some decent brands on everything and price ranges

Thanks!

Re: Lowering

A little over a year ago I was clueless about suspensions too. But I read tons of threads here and elsewhere and spoke to local people who know about suspensions, and even though I'm no expert now I know what the terminology means and what function each piece serves.

For me it's like diving into a technical manual (which I love to do). If you dont understand a word, stop, research it and once you grasp it continue until you get stumped again.

You would be very fortunate to be spoon fed anything here and if you don't have at least a basic understanding you really need to get a grasp on that before asking any questions.

Otherwise take it to a shop and pay someone else to deal with it.

Re: Lowering

and here i was thinking this was the place where all questions get answered..or was that a misnomer - to the OP..check the sticked threads of the tech talk section and you should find what your looking for..i have read loads of lowering threads on this site so i know they are there..

if i wasnt so tired or feeling lazy i would have copied the threads into this reply..sorry..heres one for you to chew on: Suspension Components Guide u can thank qnzlude for this one.

oh by the way have you had a look through the stance section..there is loads of stuff in there that might be useful to you in ur quest for knowledge.

Re: Lowering

Its complex but if you lower go with quality very slight drop=< 1" from eibach tokico, neuspeed,or koni and change shocks while you swap out the springs with koni or Tokico , then get a wheel aligned buy
a quality tire shop. Lower center gravity will handle better be safe.

Re: Lowering

i guess somethings to ask before recomending any set up, would be:
describe your driving style?
and
what you want out of your car(like your plans for it)?

Re: Lowering

so then guessing its your daily driver? do want it to still feel pretty stock just lower, or are you looking for more of a firmer ride for some better handling?

Re: Lowering

Meh alright,
well if you do plan on some track time, i'd recommend goin with some
H&R race springs, gives you about a 2inch drop, and firms up the ride some more for added handling performance,

but you dont plan on any track time then i'd recommend some
Tein S.tech springs, again will give you about a 2 inch drop but with a more stock feeling ride/handling

both of which would be fine on stock struts, but it would be a good idea to get some aftermarket ones if you have the $$ for them.

also both sets of springs are relatively inexpensive at roughly $220 US (i cant fund links for them, if you need, otherwise google)

Re: Lowering

Go tein w/ EDFC on top of tonabe :D i have a 2.5 inch drop and with the EDFC i can make the ride smooth, or nice and tight for track day, get the best of both world.....you might not want a 2.5 drop as i found using it as a daily driver you will scrape the holy out of the bottom of your car if your not carefull..when you get use to the drop you start to not pay attention unless it calls out to you

Re: Lowering

and the tein ones only drop it 1.5 in the front and 1.3 in the back. i think my gap would still be too big

Well think about what was said above, a 2 inch to 2.5 inch drop you'll be scraping the bottom of your car on speed bumps ect. I think the amount of drop on the teins that you mentioned would be perfect and this thread is helping me a lot because im lowering my car very soon as well!

I was just looking on the Tein website and i was looking for my model car and the only preludes say 4ws next to the model type so idk if that would work on mine i have Vtec model. Also i was checking out skunk2's lowering springs and skunk2 is always quality as well, http://www.skunk2.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=519-05-1660

here, the exact spec's on the tein s tech's

Ride Height:
Front: -1.46"
Rear: -1.34"

Spring Rate:
Front: 240 lbs/in
Rear: 210 lbs/in

mind you, that doesnt sound like alot. but its enough to give your car that lowered look your goin for.

with that in mind, do you plan on racing the car? (on the track of course) if so i would lean more towards the h&r race springs

Approximate suspension drop (front-rear): 2-1.8 in.

just because of the little bit lowered drop, and its gonna be a little bit firmer ride, deffinitely not a harse ride by any means. just firmer then stock.

so really its up to you, and what your plans are for the car. buy the parts that will support what modifications you want to do later(if possible of course). just a tip.

i like i bought ground control coil overs, because i wanna get a set of koni yellows.
