Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

Hey guys, I have a 99 SH.

Weird problem, upon first starting up the car and putting it to first gear to move the car, there is this weird vibration/rumble going on underneath the car for about 2 seconds or so. Some days it is quiet, some days it is pretty loud. After it happens once, it won't happen again until I turn on the car again and go out for a drive. Has anyone experienced this before? I'm wondering if it could be the axle, transmission, or ABS? I don't really know where to start. I'll try to get a video up if I can't get any info. The car is stock besides a V2 intake. I'm just afraid that an axle or something will pop up or something when driving on the highway. Thanks guys.

Is it a rumble or a rattle?!?! If it sounds like a rattle and it's coming from underneath the car then it's most likely your Cat shield that's vibrating to cause a rattling sound.

You can unbolt the shield and remove it to stop that sound from continuing.

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

Thanks for your responses guys, I really do appreciate it. Great forum! Anyhow, I do not believe it is the Cat shield. I am fairly familiar with that noise, it would be much more thin and 'metallic' sounding, and almost always engine rpm dependent. This noise, however, sounds like a very low rumble. I am really starting to think it is the ABS. I found a thread about it Weird Noise on Start Up - Honda-Tech Hopefully this could also be added to the FAQ section too or something since it seems quite common.

I know exactly what you're talking about as mine does this too. It's not the ATTS because I have a base model. And the same with yours, it won't do it again until I shut the car off and start it up to get going again. It also does it in reverse. It's hard to explain the sound but I definitely wouldn't consider it a rattle. It's more of a deep rumble than anything else and it's not very loud on mine.

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

Awesome, I'm not the only one crazy and with this problem! But, mine does not do it in reverse. I guess we can pretty much say right now it is probably an ATTS or ABS related problem. Weird noise nontheless.

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

My 01 base does this also. I'm pretty sure it is the ABS.

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

Its your ABS most likely, my base does this too, its like a check system. I'm sure someone will chime in here and tell the details. Its supposed to do this.

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

Thanks guys for chiming in. At first I suspected the it was the ABS but I have had an 94 Integra before with ABS also and it never made that noise so I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying. I wonder if fully bleeding the brakes would get rid of the noise?

Re: Weird vibration/rumble when FIRST driving the car

I don't think there is away to get rid of it. I belive it's making sure the ABS does work. My car has done it since the day I got it. If you have ever slid and used the ABS it does the same thing that it does when you first start it.
