00-01 auto tranny differences from 97-99

hello all,

I just want to say wassup to all of you fellow Prelude owners. :)

I just recently purchased a 2001 Honda prelude base auto for my GF. Ive heard that honda "did" some things to the transmission to make it " more reliable". I want to know exactly, " what did they change from the older 97-99 model auto tranny" to make it more reliable?

Nobody is exactly sure. None of the part numbers changed. But for whatever reason the 99-01 autos don't seem to fail as much as the earlier ones; though they still have a higher than average (for Honda/Acura) failure rate.

Re: 00-01 auto tranny differences from 97-99

hmm i wish i could find out what the differences are that keep the later 00-01 trannys from failing less often.

the reason i ask is that i used to own a 1998 honda prelude auto and i was one of the many that had to deal with replacing the transmission at about 105k miles. not exactly a cheap job. i really wish at the time i had more knowledge, cuz if i did, i would have just done a auto to manual swap. my original cost for replacing the tranny and other problems (radiator)was about 3500 total. i really dont want to go through that again. but i guess the first transmission was a result of using sport shift and street racing since the sweet sound of vtec was like heaven when going fast.ive learned my lesson and itll be stricty normal driving since my gf will be driving this.

but anyways, the lude has about 99,000 miles on it and seems to be running smooth. it was in great condition. just recently did a oil change, transmission fluid drain. the only thing that bothers me is the shift from 1st to second. if you lightly hold the gas it kinda lags going to second gear. but if you put medium gas it shift really nice but over revs just a tad at about 3100 rpms. no grinds or anything, just not as smooth as id like it compared to the shifts from 2-3 and 3-4 which shift at about 26-2700 rpms.

do u think changing the shift solenoid for 1st to 2nd gear will fix this?

i would love to try it out but those solenoids aren't exactly cheap lol. but if had a definitive answer, i would do it in a heart beat.

maybe some other members are experiencing the lag in shift from 1st to second gear on thier auto ludes?

Re: 00-01 auto tranny differences from 97-99

i have still been searching around plenty of different honda forums and have still haven't been able to figure out any differences between the older 97-99 tranny and 0-01 trannys.

i did find this post about issue that i'm having with my prelude concerning the shift quality from 1st to 2nd gear.

1999 Prelude Automatic trans delayed shifts. Anyone? - Honda-Tech

any input would be appreciated guys and gals :)

How many miles are on your ss lude viet_lude?

as of the moment, I'm in the process of finding all the parts for the auto-5speed swap. I just picked up a M2A4 tranny this afternoon.I'm not gonna wait for this tranny to dump on me.
