Just got 1998 Prelude Base..problems already. :"(

I just bought this yesterday and I had had it checked out at my shop on Monday of last week, had the guy smog it yesterday before buying, then drove it before buying and now as soon as i start to drive it on my own, it's leaking TONS of oil and i dont know what it is.

The seller said that it leaked a little bit amount, but this is NOT a little bit. I pull up to my curb and its dripping when i turn the car off. I pour more oil into it and then when I rev it at a stand still and get out and look under the car there is a steady stream of oil flowing onto the ground. Pretty much as much oil as i just poured into the car is now spewed on the ground. I'm sorta ticked and now the car I just paid money for, I can't drive around. I can't even drive it to my body shop because I don't want to blow the engine. Can anyone give me any info on what could be causing it?

I know I don't have much info on whats leaking or anything, but could someone tell me how I could find out what seals are broken?

Thanks.

oil cooler seal, rear main seal....... common problem areas.

check the oil level. as long as you're not below half, and you keep it out of vtec, you can drive it where you have to go. my car used to burn 3 quarts in between oil changes so I have some experience w/ low oil levels.

good luck!

ok. thank you. also, i noticed a missing seal on the engine. idk what goes there or if it's supposed to be missing. it's on the upper right hand side of the engine.
i have an image of it here.

you can see it right in the middle of the picture, which is the top right of the engine. what goes there?

Thats your pcv valve. Its probably not your giant oil leak though. Unless your whole hood underside is covered in oil!

Oh well clean up that hood and plug the PCV valve back in...add oil to full again and see if that helps.

alright i plugged the valve in, put more oil in it, but still, while the car is on, there is a steady stream of oil pouring out off the bottom. i reversed the car after plugging in the valve and adding oil to rev it up again in another spot to see how bad the oil spillage is and there is a steady line of oil leading from one puddle where it first was to the second.

That same pcv is open on my valve cover like urs. ..oil cooler gasket and cam seals may be your problem...if ur over 100k in miles get ready to do belt, water pump and tensioner overhaul...along with can seals while ur in there unless u were provided receipts that state otherwise.....

the top of your motor piece where it says dohc v-tec is the valve cover. there should be bolts holding that down with rubber/plastic washers that plugs in the valve cover.

those are all in. it's lower then the motor. it like streams off of one seal or hose onto another one then onto the ground. it's like right beneath the engine and i can't see it from the top, and i don't have a jack to look under it.

alright seems to me the problem ur having is very similar to what happened to me, oil leaking slightly and then all of a sudden it was like a damn waterfall..id put a million bucks on it being the oil cooler seal..if not that the main seal possible..cost me 160 to fix parts and labor at my shop..i had to stop twice to put oil in my car while gettin it to the shop because it was smokin oil light flashin and looked like it wanted to blow up fortunately i didnt hurt anything..do urself a favor get it towed to the shop..good luck

Re: Just got 1998 Prelude Base..problems already. :"(

hey i had a similar problem to this. check your oil filter and were it connects to the engine. there is a black rubber seal at the top of the oil filter. alot of the times, not sure why, maybe cuz of the heat that rubber seal unstiks from the filter and sticks to the motor. so when u change yr oil, and put a new filter in, with a second seal, they both end up cracking.. and oil jst flies out of there. thats what happened to me. now wenever i change my oil i chek and make sure the old rubber still isnt stuk on there. and unfortunatley it still does almost every time. but oil leaked at it most when i shut the car off or turn it on. while im driving not so much. so jst check that filter out. hope it helps. if thats the case all you gotta do is change yr oil n not spend any crazy money on parts that mite be fine.

I was thinking the same thing. Depending on which side of the car its leaking from. If he changed the oil before he sold it to you. Might have a double gasket of the oil filter

I can almost tell you if its that bad you should easily be able to figure this out on your own.

Get underneath your car, wipe off as much oil as you can for starters, then spray some degreaser and clean it all up as best you can.

make sure its in park or not in gear, pull ur ebrake up nice and tight

fire up ur car, and grab ur flashlight and crawl underneath it as fast as possible, check these things first

Oil Filter... like someone else mentioned if its doublegasketed or no gasket, it will pour out like crazy

check your oil pan drain plug
Check all around your oil pan for leakage from your gasket.
check your oil cooler,
if its not comming from anywhere in those spots, look for where the oil is dripping and start tracing the oil spilleage u might need to crawl back further and check behind the motor also, could be an oil sprocket seal

Yeah pretty much what they said sounds good. I just had to change the rear main seal on my prelude because it was seeping oil when it ran. Anyways, like they said, try to find out where it's coming from. However, be very careful while you're under there because you wouldn't want that new shirt to get covered with tons of oil now would ya?

I saw that you mentioned you didn't have a jack, well, you could always get a set of these:

They'll run you about $45 from autozone. While they're not a real substitute for a jack + jack stands, they still are really handy when trying to safely look/fit underneath the car

Re: Just got 1998 Prelude Base..problems already. :"(

Go buy a PCV from your local shop like Autozone or Pepboys and plug that sh*t up. Then borrow someone's jack if you dont have already and go underneath to see if your oil drain bolt is on tight. If not then the teeth on the bolt might be grinded off.

You might wanna also check this part out bc it happened to me. I had a slight drip for a few days then one morning while heding to work the dripping became a flow and after work I saw a huge ass puddle of oil and it was shooting out more then ever to discover that the oil sensor that's above the oil filter was shot and that the O-ring keeping the oil from leaking out was worn out.

i think this is probably the problem. i'll be taking it in to a local honda specializing shop right now. the guy said that oil dripped for a while, and now it is like a water fall. soo, we'll see what they say and i'll let you guys know. i'll be getting a jack soon too so for future problem i can do some better diagnostics.

thank you guys all for the help. i'm new to the forums and it feels good to have people helping me out. :D +rep to everyonee!
