Ticking sound after oil change

So I went and got an oil change on saturday morning about 12:00 and by sunday evening I noticed a ticking sound like you would get if your oil was low coming from the engine. I checked the oil level and it was just a little low so I added a quart but the ticking is still there and it is pretty loud and noticable. This sound was not there before I got the oil change. It sounds like the lifters and it gets louder as the rpm's increase. Anyone got any ideas on what this could be and why this would happen after getting an oil change. Car is a 2000 base lude with 118k miles.

Re: Ticking sound after oil change

you might need a valve adjustment. did you take the car to a shop for the oil change, or did you DIY??

Re: Ticking sound after oil change

I took it to a shop. What is a rough estimate of valve adjustment and is it common that it was not doing this before and then after an oil change it can start?

Re: Ticking sound after oil change

I'm thinking you probably had oil in there that was old and thick and the change with new thin oil revealed the noise. I would go with thicker oil..............

Re: Ticking sound after oil change

Ya maybie. It is a ticking like the lifters is what it sounds like or valves or something. 5-w30 is what was put in there what would be a better thicker oil to go with?

x2.

The clearances on the h22 tend to like the 10w30 alot better. Just as effective, but a bit quieter and tends to burn less oil (lost through the rings).

Re: Ticking sound after oil change

You can get lifter tick from certain synthetic oils. Mobil 1 or other might cause it, but the real cause of it is dirty lifters. If you don't want to take them out and clean them you can try and using an engine detergent/cleaner before your next oil change and see if that helps. or go to walmart and buy wynns engine tune up treatment for 7 dollars and try that. if not then do the valve adjustment hope that helps! go full synthetic!

THanks guys. After I get the valve adjustment sat I will probably throw some sefoam in the oil and then get a another oil change with synthetic even though I just got one.

Is that a direct quote of what the mechanic told you??? You dont have 4 valves. You have 16 valves. You have 4 cylinders. If your mechanic told you 1 out of 4 of your valves was off he's and idiot and you need to find a new one.
