Tuning

Sorry if there has already been a thread on this but i didnt see one.

I am planning to tune my 5th gen and i had a few ?'s about parts i will need.

First off i know i need a new ecu. I was planning on buying the p72.
does it matter if i buy an auto or manual p72 for my manual 5th gen?
do i need a wideband o2 sensor?
what do you think of the tuning products from moates?

heres the link

Re: Tuning

You should stay away from that and get it tuned by a reputable tuner from your area.

What ecu do you have now?

A p72 ecu is only a manual ecu. They came out of the Integra GSR and they did not come with automatic transmissions.

Is your car a 5 speed or auto?

Re: Tuning

you obviously do not have the knowledge to be tuning your own vehicle. way more goes into it then you think. take it somewhere and have it dyno tuned for you.

Re: Tuning

ya definitely bring to a knowledgeable tuner to have it tuned, and then if you really wanna learn it, see if he will help teach you it. i know my tuner did and is helpin me with it.

or

HRTuning

If you are interested in either of those contact me. Learning on your engine while it is stock is the best way to go. But you better have some idea of what you are doing before you get into it or you are going to get frustrated and wonder why you spent upwards of 750 dollars on a tuning setup and cant get your car right. One of the best ways to attack this is to get this setup and have a tuner do the work for you so you always have a calibration to fall back on. You can do all the ****ing up you want, but you will always have something that will run the car perfect.

You can pick up a PLX SMR wideband with display for just over 200 dollars. It also have a 0-5v input you can use to wire into the ecu and setup your tuning software to pickup the wideband signal as logger data.

You will need a chipped ecu. I would suggest running either a p06 that has been converted to a vtec ecu or a chipped p28. They are the easiest to come buy and are typically cheaper than the p28. Simply pull the vacuum hose off the IAB diaphram to keep the IAB valves open all the time or pull the intake plenum off and take the IAB plate out completely.

Re: Tuning

theres also Crome, a free program to download and use. i know i have it on my laptop right now. its definitely a good one to learn at first, just cause its pretty easy, and has a couple of the more common features in it. like 2 step(launch Control)/3step(full throttle shift), Shift Light, etc.

it also does not allow you to datalog (you must use a second party datalogger) unless you buy the pro version for 150 dollars (pointless), has bugs, associated errors and piss poor customer service. Not to mention there are rarely updates.

overall its a big headache and most reputable tuners refuse to tune with it because of the known problems.

Go with eCtune or Neptune. You wont regret it.

many of the advanced tables dont work as they should

back when i was using it, there was a HUGE ignition problem where the bug would not let you retard timing. Found that out while helping a friend tune his JRSC B17. Good thing it wasnt detonating That didnt get fixed for what....2 years after the problem was known...and it was hit or miss. Sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldnt.

oh the connecting problems!! Out of the blue sometimes it just wouldnt connect even though you just had it connected.

its just a headache. When someone like myself learns that it is not trustworthy, i would never put it on a customer car. Not worth it when you can spend 100 dollars more to get tuned on a much more sophisticated software back by multiple top tuners all over the world and REAL customer service when you have issues.

its just not worth it when there is better programming for not much money.

ahhh ok. ya i had heard there was problems with it, but i never knew exactly
what those problems were.

ya i'm out in iraq right now, and ya downloaded crome. just really been mesing with it, tryin to understand some of the different things in it.

like whats the difference between closed loop/open loop oxygen sensors?
or why would disable a sensor in your map? just if you have deleted it from the engine guessing?

Re: Tuning

as of now the car is completely stock.
i figured that since i will most likely go the boosted route that i will need a tune in the future. so im starting there first

forgive me for my 'newbness' but i know alot of you are infinitely more knowledgeable than me so i figured this would be a great place to start my questioning and research.

i have heard that the 'best' ecu is the p72 and they dont seem to hard to come buy so i will probably run with one of those.

my friend will be tuning the car with a program called tunerpro(i think) but if need be i can always take it to get tuned by a professional.

will any wideband o2 work or do i have to have a certain one?

is there anything about this setup from moates that simply will not work?
