Leak... need help... water everywhere

title says it all...

I bought a 97 base prelude about a month ago from the first owner who had it garaged for a month at the time.

So 2 days ago, after a night of hard rain (car parked outside) I got into my car... started to drive down the road. When i hit the brakes at a stop sign i heard what sounded like water falling and looked back. Water was literally pouring from the rear seats and onto the floor of the lude (water reached the passengers feet! @#!$).

So i turned around and went home... opened up my trunk and found 6-7 litres of water along with my spare tire. Drained that out, took out the back seats, all the mats and everything is just soaking (still).

Right now, I've just got one small portable heater working on the back seats (they are just starting to dry really)

Sorry for all the text, but as you may imagine I'm pretty choked all this has happened.

Am I going to need to take out all the carpeting in order for it to dry completely and not smell? or will a few heaters and a week or so do the job?

Also, I'm almost positive the leak was from one of the tail lights as i checked the sunroof drains and they look fine....

May want to check the trunk gasket itself.

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

I'm pretty sure I've isolated the leak to the tail light gasket, however when i moved the car this morning i could still hear water swishing

the rear seats are out, as well as everything in the trunk anyone have any ideas where this water could be hiding?

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

You probably just need to give it time to dry, I found a product called 'Febreeze Auto' to work really well on any surface such as the seats or carpet in the car. My mom works in a restaurant and always comes home with clothes smelling like garlic and onion. Trust me, I couldn't believe how strong the smell was when she left her work clothes in the car overnight. Seems as if the smell latched itself onto the car's interior. Applied some Febreeze Auto and it totally neutralized the smell, I was really impressed.

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

Or you can jus simply do what I did!!!

I have the same issue and water reached into the trunk and soaked up the rear seat. I was told to jus take out the 2 rubber plugs under the spare tire n *BAM you're good to go!!! So now whenever the rain leaks into the trunk that it'll drain right back out onto the road.

Jus make sure you line up under the spare with a rubber mat that you can buy from Home Depot and cut the same holes where the holes in the trunk are n that should solve your water leak into the car issue.

haha I went to the local honda dealership yesterday and ordered the part in it was actually pretty cheap @ $23.

Its a shame this all happened during winter.. when everything takes forever to dry.

Thanks for the help guys

.....................

It seems the tail light was not the main issue, after 3 hours outside today i checked out the trunk and found about an inch and a half of water built up in the trunk

I guess tomorrow i start from scratch

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

i was wonderin how your rear seats could have filled with water if the leak was in the tail light. how about the seal around the back window?

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

I'm telling you....

Jus unplug those 2 rubber corks!!!

You ordering the part...$23
You removing the 2 rubber plugs...PRICELESS!!!

If your water issue continues after spending $23...then will you listen to me and try my method that I was told by other wisemen?!?!

Re: Leak... need help... water everywhere

yea but if he does that he'll still be getting moisture in his trunk. it might be a good idea until he figures it out but its not a permanent fix.

my trunk plugs are out at the moment... and today being the first dry day in a while I took the hose to the car. The trunk is leaking right beside the right tail light, should be another easy fix

thanks again guys
