Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

Ok here is the link to it
http://www.autotrader.com/

The main question is how much should I pay for a Prelude like this, I know it's kind of hard telling by the pictures.

What are some of the main things to check other than last tuneup and the last time the timing belt was changed?

The mileage is kind of bothering me and the cracked windshield. I was going to get a new stereo put in it anyway so that doesn't bother me too much.

Is it me or is that a cop car next to it too?? lol

That is a low mile Honda 128K for a 97, that is only ~10K a year.

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

Get someone that knows about manual cars..
Get a mechanic.. or someone with some knowledge

A good / decent paint job means nothing if the car has problems.

I didn't do the math but if it is about 10k/yr like the previous post said then the mileage shouldn't be bothering you at all.

Average is about 12k / yr for any car. Any more then its bad. Any less.. you win.

Also, think about it.
Do you want one that is already fixed or you prefer a stock one?
Stock ones = less likely to have been bitten up (engine wise which is usually more important to look at)

Dont seem to eager to buy it.
Make them wait... unless you really want it.

Think about it before you buy with any car.

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

it looks pretty decent. then again thats only the exterior. you might want to run a carfax on it which always a good idea for any car to make sure it didnt get into any accidents and is fixed up, thats usually the deal with custom painted cars.

take it for a test drive, not just around the block but about 2-4miles on it. and listen to how the engine runs and everything. dont let the person distract you.

check out all the engine components and ask if he/she has done any custom work on it.

the mileage is fine for a car that age, i bought my 98 with 100,000 some miles on it and its a 5spd. as long as you have a 5spd and not an auto you're tranny will be fine, but you want to listen for grinds and the smoothness of the gears when shifting.

so on top of that starting and test driving the car is the stuff you want to do and if possible, drive it a little hard haha.

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

She doesnt look too bad at all. The interior + exterior look well taken care of. The engine bay also looks very clean. I would check for fluid leaks of
ANY kind in the engine bay. It not having a radio is good because when you test drive it, you can listen for any wierd noises etc etc. Also, is it just me or the the brake fluid reservoir look low? Might wanna check that out as well. Anyways, I just skimmed the surface as far as inspecting her goes. I would do like Tyronne said and get a trusted mechanic and do a full inspection. Good luck

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

Thanks for all the help you guys. I'm bringing my dad with me to look at the car and he's no mechanic but he has worked on cars a lot.

Does $6100 sound like to much to pay for this car or not. Kelley Blue Book gave me a lower number even at suggested retail.

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

6100 isnt a bad price, since its lightly modded and all. and the custom paint job. but if there is room to lower it go for it. its a decent price for a decent car. and you cant really put a price on a prelude haha

id say offer 5,500 see what he says it doesnt look bad at all not a fan of the color that much since its eye candy for cops but thats just my .02 sense.. 5.5k is a very reasonable offer.

wow thats pretty expensive for what it needs. Personally I would buy something stock and do it myself that way u know that nobody messed with anything on it, (french accent) "like a blank canvas and you are the artist".

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

I don't know guys, I looked at it today and it was in really good condition as far as cosmetic but it had some major problems.
For one it was totaled and the last registration is in Geico, so I'm guessing it will have a salvaged title. They have never registered it because they have a dealer's license on it.
The ABS, ATTS, and maintenance light was on and he said he was going to take it to a mechanic and get it fixed tomorrow. I really like the car but I don't know if it's worth it especially with all the problems.
I also asked when the last tuneup was and timing belt changed and he doesn't know. He did say that the oil needed changed and that is why the maintenance light is on.
What do you think, should I walk away or try to get it for less.

ehhh id prob take it to ur own tech man or give him a low offer i think thats alot to work with timing belt and work (if you dont do it urself) costs around 400-600 plus other stuff needs to be considered as well honestly if it was me id take it to my tech and get it checked out get an estimate and go from there

ya, i wouldnt buy it man. just keep looking. the paint looks nice and all, but thats just covering the other stuff. besides being totalled before, all the CEL's, and him having little to no knowledge of it. it also has a big ass dent on the rear quarter just behind the right door. my advice is keep looking

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

Looks well kept I doubt they would take any less. Unless you have cash they might drop $500 if your lucky. Like I said though you need cash money. Your not going to get a automobile loan for that much, the car is too old. You can get a signature loan but be ready for that interest rate. You'll end up paying 10 grand for it.

Plus I saw that paint job and thought LittleFoot was selling hers then I remembered she wasn't from TN.

Nice ride I'd buy it. If I didn't already own one

Re: Might go look at a Prelude Tomorrow, how much is it worth

I look at cars as an investment too, and although this prelude looks pretty nice it's not worth what he wants for it, especially since with a salvaged title the book on it drops tremendously, so I think I'm going to look a bit more, I'm not in a real hurry.

I red somewhere in forums that 97-98 models are having some problem. you might want to look for 99 to 2001 models.

There you go, I keyed in everything but I didn't know your zip so it might differ by a couple dollars.

I haven't personally seen this car but I've watched it hit Craigslist a few times. It seems like a decent car.

Wish I had seen that post sooner.... That car was put back together at a shop on Western ave across from the Gymnastic center. I drive by it everyday, i have stopped to look at cars there before and they always have frame damage so its no surprise that this one is salvage. I have seen this prelude out on test drives before and I thought they had sold it about 2 weeks ago.... you may be dealing with the owner/worker from that mechanic shop. Either way I have seen nothing clean come from that shop. If you are looking for a straight car this is not the one.

I know a good amount of people that go to etsu.

You need to come out to Knox and chill, especially if you get a Lude.

That sounds like an awesome ideal. Problem is I don't have a car now since my Bronco decided it didn't want to start anymore and I'm having trouble finding a prelude that someone hasn't ruined. lol.
