Looking at a 2000 Prelude..Need some info

Im looking at a couple 5th generation Preludes and one has really caught my Eye,it seems like after reading this forum they all burn oil.I asked the owner and he said this car burns approxamatly 1 litre every 5000km's.the car has 198000 km's and looks to have been well looked after.Im just a little uneasy about the oil consumption issue. Is this perfectly normal or should i walk away from it.
Any info would be great
Thanks

Re: Looking at a 2000 Prelude..Need some info

The more mileage a car has on it the more the chances the car is going to burn oil, this is especially true with preludes in particular. This is normal for preludes with high mileage. I go between 1 and a half to 2 quarts in between oil changes and i use synthetic. My car also had two oil leaks, one is fixed and the other one will be done soon. I wouldnt buy a prelude with over 120,000 miles on it unless you have big plans for the car.

goodluck

Re: Looking at a 2000 Prelude..Need some info

I bought mine with 198000 miles cause it was a real clean piece, it was well taken care of and totaly stock ( was never ****ed with or hacked ). Everything in the car works perfect and i drives awesome. Also I should add I got it for a great Deal!! It also has a auto tranny and it is starting to slip a little bit when you really get on it in between first and second but... I am doing a five speed swap soon any ways. Mine may burn a little oil, but bairly notacible. Just make sure you check it and change it regurally. I do mine every 3K miles.

this one is a 5 spd..the owner is a honda technician and seems to have taken very good care of the car.Car looks solid and has no aftermarket performance parts, the only thing i was a little scared about is the KM's and oil consumption issues.

not always true. they do burn more in VTEC tho. Its actually because of the FRM cylinder walls.

I'm not really all that familiar w/ metric system, but it sounds about equivalent to our quart every 3000. I would hold off. Preludes are great cars, but at 198km the motor prob won't last all that much longer, and you're going to end up sinking some $ into it if I were to guess at what the future holds.

Believe me, hold out for a better deal. Good things come to those who wait (sound like my mom ) I waited on a prelude for almost a year, ended up finding one that was perfect for me, for my price range. Believe me man, wait it out.

I'm assuming your canadian because you're talking in KM's

he's still asking too much

now if it's in perfect condition and he has all the paperwork etc maybe 5000 (it would really have to be so clean it blew my mind)

(note I was going to sell my lude old lude with a shot clearcoat and about 210000 klicks and it burned oil for 4000... it failed the e test (needed new cat) so I sold for 3500... so before you americans jump in... remember prices are very different)

if he's american feel free to tell me to stfu

Personally I vote no go. seriously man. just my opinion, not my $ or my car. Not saying the vehicle wasn't taken care of, but i just feel personally its not worth the money. Your call tho man. you want it, and feel its worth it, buy it.

Good luck no matter what your choice.

pull the dipstick and oil cap..look for burn marks on the dip stick, oil is clean, and look for a more caramelized look from coolant getting into oil, may mean you need a new head gasket...check for leaks..oil, tranny, cam seals(search if you need)...proof of pump and timing belt change...keep the radio off when you drive a listen for squeeks, VTEC engage, suspension noises....
if your budget isnt into alot of repairs and extra maintenance, wait for yours to come along and keep saving money..but get a lude for sure and keep it clean...less can be more

99% of preludes in Canada are way over priced. A 10 year old car with almost 200 000km for $6000 is a rip off. I over paid for my prelude, but I really wanted one. How bad do you want a prelude.
