only one cylinder is at top dead cylinder at a time.

1, 3, 4, 2 is the TDC sequence.

Re: top dead center, open valves

well if your saying that on the cam gears.. the arrows are straight up then that usually means cylinder 1's valves are closed and cylinder 3 should be open but starting to close. cylinder 1 is in the combustion stroke and cylinder 3 is coming up for the combustion stroke. so yea cyinder 3 should be slightly open still because if you did a 90 degree or quarter turn of the crank clockwise then cylinder 3 would be completely close and cyinder 4 would be slightly open. i think that makes sense... easier to draw out then put in words for sure. lol.

yea but all he is asking is should cylinder 3 be open if he is at top dead on cylinder one. w/ cam gear markers straight up means top dead on cylinder 1 and cylinder 3 should be open.
