Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

I bought it for 4,800 and had to replace the whole front right side for 394$ and it seems perfect after that but I was looking through the transmission guide sticky and what my car does wasn't in there. (it's an automatic)

When its in first gear and I'm not in sports mode the RPM's go up real quick like 400 to 800 (I've never really looked closely) before switching over to 2nd gear. Although if I'm using the slap stick its perfectly fine.

I don't even wanna think about a trans failure but I thought I'd ask to be safe. I'm hoping this is just normal.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

well welcome the PZ first of all. Post pics if you get a chance! About your problem it could just be the Vtec kicking in but it usually does that at 5000 rpm. To be on the safe side go get your car checked out because automatics have horrible trannys! Have you owned a honda before with vtec? idk im not that experieced but i hope somebody can be of better help.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Well i live in Michigan and its diamond white, in other words the car looks like god took a crap on it right now. Once it gets warm (in four months haha) you better believe it'll be shining 24/7 though.

I'll have to take it for a drive tomorrow and check thoroughly on what happens between 1st and 2nd.
I've been reading for about an hour now and it doesn't look to good for me. What it feels like it should do is switch gears at like 2,500RPM
but what mine does is hit 2,500 and revs up to 3,000 really quick and settles down to like 2,000 when it hits 2nd (This is with me being easy on the gas though)

If you are being easy on it and it is doin that then it most definitely is not vtec LOL. I've never owned an auto lude, but I do know that the 97 &98s had more issues that were resolved( or at least improved upon) in the 99 &^ models. From what it sounds like your only getting the very first symptoms. I would start shopping, and baby the hell out of it. Stay out of SS. Don't use it, that will just kill it faster. I would say you probably have some time before it takes a hit on you completely but idk. Maybe someone like Derek904 will chime in seeing as he just did the A>5spd swap this past month. ( which btw, is the ONLY way to go if you can afford it...IMO)

Hope that helps a little. Just consider it as a small bump since I was really no help at all lol.

OH and welcome to PZ!!

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Yeah man. Definitely sounds like ur tranny is starting 2 go out. That sucks. The only things u can do is have the tranny rebuilt, get another auto tranny. Or start saving for a 5spd swap. If I was u I would just go for the 5spd swap. It will be alotttt more reliable in the end. If u have any questions about the swap. Just ask and I'll try 2 help. Im in the middle of one and im almost done gathering all the parts I need minus the tranny itself. Oh and welcome 2 pz btw!!!

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

first things first::: the main things you need to know about preludes, is that they are touchy. they are extremely picky. you don't necessarily have to "baby" them 24-7 but sometimes 1 small problem can disguise itself as a bigger problem.

in this case. consider the fact that you got this car from someone else and they could lie to you and say they took amazing care of it. but in reality they never changed the oil, never changed the plugs/wires never changed tranmission fluid.

i would start there. change your oil, check your tranny fluid, and (change that out if needed) change your spark plugs with NGK Honda Plugs. I can guaruntee you that you car will treat you well if you do that stuff asap. that way you know ok i have fresh oil, fresh tranny fluid, fresh plugs(check the plug wires also, to see if they are old).. then take the next step and start looking for vaccuum leaks, coolant leaks. etc. this will help you eliminate some of the smaller issue that cause bigger ones. although a 5spd tranny is def a better idea, these things will help you diagnose your issue quicker. if the car hasn't been maintenanced then it's going to hate you back.

my vote is you prob. could use a transmission flush first before you do anything.

Welcome to the zone. Glad to see another 5th gen member. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about transmissions so I can't offer any help.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Kinda sounds like a tranny issue, when mine headed out i'd start in normal driving mode & the rpms would climb up to 4-5,000 but the car was barely moving forward, i also noticed during that horrible time when i'd try to drive in sport shift, it would sometimes upshift or downshift on it's own without me even moving the freakin shifter, at that point i was like "oh hellll no' lol

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Im gonna agree with sicksh98, new fluid can go a long way. Start eliminating some of those things so you know its not that. Also it will save you alot of diagnosing time with your mechanic if you can tell him you have all new fluids, plugs and wires. This will narrow it down for him as well as you. And if you can get a hold of the guy and even ask him if he has any previous records of work he has gotten done on the car may help as well. Also make sure you check for vacumm lines. It may be something stupid that your just over looking because you think how could it possible be that. Eliminate small before spending big. Good luck.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Well I grew up in Detroit, but once we got the money we moved outta
there haha. We live like 20 mins-ish from the city now in a town called wyandotte (lincoln park, gross isle. Right around there).
I'm thinking your from Detroit as well considering your picture?

Well, I drove the car a lot today and my dad even took it for a run and I did
not hear any whining, grinding, and crap like that. I also didn't feel any clunks.
My dad said all was fine. I also checked the trans fluid and it smelled normal
and it didn't have any black flakes in it. I have to keep in mind the last owner JUST changed the fluid 2 weeks ago.

The only thing that concerns me still is how the car sometimes revs up real
quick before switching to 2nd. Even if everything else is fine.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

Yeah dude, my ex is from Wyandotte, and my buddies band 'Anchors' is from there. Lions, Tigers, and Beers FTW! I love that place. I work up at the Little Caesars headquarters inside the Fox. But I live in Monroe and go to school at Eastern. I'm all over the palce, lol.

Check out xceedspeed.com too if you haven't all ready. They're a Michigan only "sport compact" site and club. Some cool guys on there. If I'm not mistaken, the owner lives in Wyandotte or Taylor. I think I've probably got the only other white one in a 30 miles radius of us (I hope anyways), I'm sure I'll see ya' around eventually bro.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen, 1998

this is just my advice being a mechanic, take it for what it's worth.

i am not too familiar with prelude transmissions, but here is my experience with a lot of other domestic and import cars. depending on the condition of the trans fluid right now, if it's brown and burnt looking, you do NOT want to do a flush. if this is the case, what happens is the fluid in there is thick from internal wear in the transmission, and the seals swell up. when you flush it and put new fresh fluid in there, because it's much thinner than the old one, it starts to leak past the seals and your tranny will stop working in a very short time.

again, not completely familiar with prelude transmissions but i am tired of doing transmission flushes as per customer request, and having them come back in a week for a new transmission.

if the fluid is indeed burnt looking, my suggestion would be not to change the fluid, and cross your fingers because it is on borrowed time. otherwise, if the fluid looks fine, a new filter and a flush wouldn't be a bad idea. good luckk!
