My Intake Idea

well i hit a snag while i was working on my engine today, due to lack of power tools... aka impact driver... which im getting one just got to wait...

anyways.... i had the idea after i saw some old videos of people making there own "cold air intake system"... and it got me from everybody saying a short ram sucks the hot air from the engine bay and a CAI is better... so i got my cardboard box out and starting cutting. after i got something that i liked, i transferred it to a piece of metal, this is what i got...

i know its a little ruff... but i will be cleaning this up...

got a little creative with some dryer exhaust pipe..

PS:that inner fender is the one i got for $10, off a 4th gen lude, it ALMOST was a perfect fit...

any idea's or comment would help... please don't burn me on my idea...

i also thought of having a fan on the end that i can turn on and off depending on weather like if its raining or something... that way i wont have to be moving very fast or what ever...

Re: My Intake Idea

pics FTL!!

if it's a metal shroud around the intake filter so it's only sucking air thru the hole, that's a very good idea. alotta top-end intakes and cars have that design, so that the filter is completely isolated from the engine bay heat.

looks dirty and ghetto, but functional (exactly what my engine bay is haha)

well im pretty sure its al... but i was thinking of painting it and maybe some bondo and **** to make everything smooth, or some of that heater tape, so it really blocks out the heat... im just wondering if i have a fan that i can attach to the hose to help direct cold air in to the filter...

Re: My Intake Idea

That looks like a pretty sweet design you got there. The fan would be a good Idea, but the wiring for that would be a pain.

Def looking ghetto but i see where your're going. Instead of metal, maybe a modified plastic battery box would better suit the app? I dunno. Good luck though

i bet if you hunted for some plastic of similar size and encased the filter completely (including the top) it would work out nicely. with the dryer piping i've seen that on track cars, nice idea...

Re: My Intake Idea

wrap your intake in header wrap. That should help to. :)

Re: My Intake Idea

Not a bad design. Looks like a $300 cheaper version than a K&N system. I wonder about the header wrap idea. Seems like that would be the thing to do. An aluminum heat sink wouldn't do what you are after. That is to disperse saturated heat. You would want to block it out. I can't imagine a fan in the dryer hose would be worth while Your engine will pull sooo much more volume than a little fan would put out. Keep us posted on how this comes along.

Re: My Intake Idea

I hope that piece of metal isn't the final product. Also, there's got to be something better than dryer hose for the inlet feed. Maybe something not so reflective. Looks like the idea is there but unless you seal the box off properly it wont be as good as it could be. It's hard not to say something negative with those floormats staring me in the face... to each his own.
