Couple Questions!

So.. I wish I had a recent picture to post up to bring some eye candy for all you guys. (Will probably post one up tomorrow even tho I don't want to.. haven't lowered it yet)

Anyways,

Car is a base AUTO 5th gen with about 140-150k miles on it.
Bought it about a month ago and have had zero problems with it
Besides the thing about it wasting quite a lot of gas.. 15-19mpg.

- I want to change the oil and transmission oil..
What oil should i buy and the filter?
What transmission oil? (Honda right?)

- I'm planning on doing a tune up also..
What spark plugs should i use?
Wires?
Plan to get a new K&N filter for my intake.

- For fuel...?
Going to be changing distributor cap
Fuel filter
What else?

.. Anything else I should be doing to the car?

if thats all city, id say 20mpg is average, could be wrong though. just checked "5-speed manual: 22/26
4-speed automatic: 21/26" if you drive conservitively though, youll get a decent amount more. the tuneup you want to do will help a lot too

5w-30. any brand oil you want to put in, ive used castrol, advance auto brand. and any filter you want to use. if you dont know what size filter, just go to advance auto, etc and ask. as for the transmission, i really dont know, i havent done it yet. ill check my manual tomorrow and update you

Plan to get a new K&N filter for my intake.
plugs- ngk iridiums
wires- i got the ngk on ebay, plugs and wires
k&n is an awesome way to go, especially if you still have the stock intake

Re: Couple Questions!

yea.. the mpg could probably be better.
im a "spirited driver" lately.. haha

ill try to drive normal now and see what i get..

now i know what oil to use..

question tho..
what kind of spark plugs are there? i thought the iridium ones where the "higher end" but not recommended. (dont remember where i read this..) hah but fill in to teach me =].

i dont have a stock intake. i have an AEM short ram. but the filter is old and nasty. (previous owner)

EDIT: should i replace the distributor? .. and is there aftermarket stuff or get a honda one..
also.. for the fuel filter? honda? ..

Re: Couple Questions!

also.. how many quarts for transmission and for engine oil? o.O i know.. i can check the manual. but since you are already checking. but i want to double check. sometimes i dont understand all those numbers in there...

im not an engine guy.. i know things here and there but thats all.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Couple Questions!

theres a grade lower than iridium. u can get the ngk platinum. i havent heard or had any problems with the ngk platinum. they go for a good price if ur a college student on a budget.

Re: Couple Questions!

hm....u might have to go to a performance place or order them online. but im pretty sure u can order a set from ur nearest autoparts store. if money isnt an issue then go with the higher end products. but a lot of ppl go with the iridium plugs

Re: Couple Questions!

for the shortram, I'd just go for a k&n cone, cince they're guarenteed and you can clean them. I know honda OEM plugs are NGK, don't know what model though. it's something like 5.1 quarts for the oil, don't know for the transmission. I don't know what store oh can get the wire sets in, if you don't mind waiting, I'd just scope em out on eBay. if the distributor isn't bad, I don't think you need to replace it. fuel filter wouldn't hurt either, I haven't done mine though, so I can't name any brands

Re: Couple Questions!

for the model plugs just go to the autoparts store and tell them ur yr make model engine and theyll get u squared away with the ones u need and theyll give u the choice of brand and model. id just go to summitracing.com to order ur ngk wires. if u order online ull have to wait either way

- I want to change the oil and transmission oil..
What oil should i buy and the filter?
What transmission oil? (Honda right?)

+Oil i use 10w30 and mobil one or if you have the cash royal purple but i wouldnt use that unless your car is heavily modded. I also put in a full fuel system cleaner after the oil change and it makes a difference.
+Transmission fluid, you have to go to the honda dealership and get the real transmission fluid, i would not reccomend using one from a store for sometimes it is not the same grade quality as the real thing. I have a 98 auto and thats all i use and i have about 135k on mine

- I'm planning on doing a tune up also..
What spark plugs should i use?
Wires?
Plan to get a new K&N filter for my intake.

+NGK is always the best spark plugs and spark plug wire combo you can get, i suggest going on autopartswarehouse.com and looking for some there, thats where i get mine. Oh and i always get platinum much better quality but you pay for it but it does benefit you alot more.
+K&N filter can be bought at autozone for 45bucks to replace your stock air filter. Or if you have an aftermarket one it will still run you around the same price and you can never go wrong with k&n
- For fuel...?
Going to be changing distributor cap
Fuel filter
What else?

+Despite if the ditributor cap still looks good or not, its always best to change every component of what part of the car you are working on. So if moneys not an issue then go ahead and get a new one.
+Fuel filter i really dont have a reference for that one i just use one that autozone provides me with and i still get 20-25mpg.
Also like stated above, get a full fuel system cleaner like gumout or STP and use it everytime you change oil or every 3000miles.

.. Anything else I should be doing to the car?
If you dont have to, dont floor it and vtec it everytime you get off a light haha. go green

Re: Couple Questions!

use honda tranny fluid!!!!!
i have a base model as well and i dont use anything but that.
use 10w-30 oil and a honda filter (expensive but worth it)
and use an injector cleaner such as tech-tron i believe its called, u can get it at auto zone.

I would also consider puttin a tranny cooler on it, unless u plan on doin a 5speed swap
