SRS light is on - any common problems?

The SRS light is on in my 98 base prelude. I have not yet pulled the code to see what the malfunction is. Please do not yell at me to search - cause i did, or that I am posting in the wrong place. I am new to forums in genneral. I was just wondering if there is some common problem you guys have seen or had on your cars that makes the light come on. I was thinking of things like the clock spring in the steering wheel or a seat belt receptical that went bad or a pass seat sensor pad, (like the civics have, idk if these cars even have one), all these things i have seen go bad before on other cars and turn the air bag light on. I was just wondering if there was a common thing that went bad on these preludes. (i know that the answers you give me will not 100% fix my car, I am sill gonna have to pull the code and check it, but i just wanted to get ready for what i might find. Thanks for your help.

Your not that new if you know that they will yell and complain that you didn't search first that means your not a noob. Right? ha ha ha, no seriously I don't know what to tell you about the SRS light over than running a diagnostics on it. Are you the first owner, was it in an accident. I've seen a lot of people disconnect the battery and plug it back in before a demo to sell the car. I know running the diagnostics is not cheap either. Not too sure if the readers at Auto Zone or advanced will read SRS, if the check engine light is not on not sure. Dealer will probably charge like $65. I wear seatbelts anyways, so not that concerned about my airbags. Not that airbags alone will save you but I never had airbags on my other cars and I have walked away from a head on collision before.

Re: SRS light is on - any common problems?

I just got the car last week. I bought it from the orriginal owner. He said it has never been in an accident, little bumper scrapes, but nothing major. There is no oversprasy anywhere and the ft fenders I can tell have never been off and all the paint is good, so I believe him. I wear my seatbelt too so im not that worried about it, but would sill like to fix it. I dont like staring at that light while driving- and I know i can take the bulb out but thats not the point.thanks for your help. I think honda has a lifetime warrenty on all seatbelt componets so im kinda hoping you guys have seen seat belt recepticals go bad on these cars. PS I am new here- just signed up last week,(when I got the car) and this is the first forum site I have ever been a part of. I am amazed how well this site is ran! Good job to all who is a part of it.

Re: SRS light is on - any common problems?

OK so I borrowed a scan tool and checked my car for air bag codes. It came up with code 5-01--Internal Malfunction of SRS System. I was like oh no that sounds expesive! I cleared the code and the light went out! - and stayed out. I was so happy. Now the light works as it should by coming on for a couple seconds on startup and then goes right out. Ive been driving for almost a week now and the light hasnt come back on yet, and I hope it stays out.

Re: SRS light is on - any common problems?

Just to open this thread up again... You say the SRS code was cleared? Is this done by just removing the negative from the battery for 10 seconds? I know this resets some, but I had heard a safety feature like this could not be reset like that...?
