Replacement keys..

Can you still purchase and have keys made for the prelude at a Honda dealership?

Re: Replacement keys..

its a helluva lot cheaper to bring it to a locksmith and have them clone you a key. the dealership near me wanted like 50 for the key and another 90 to program it. i went to a locksmith and the dude charged me 35

Yea, all they need is the VIN for your car.

Re: Replacement keys..

Honda can cut keys from the VIN. Any locksmith can cut another key (from an existing one). Both Honda and some locksmiths can clone the transponder. With the red key Honda can create new keys and you can authorise them for your immobiliser system.

Locksmiths will use ilco or similar blanks. Look exactly the same other than the logo. Without an authorised transponder, the key will fit all the locks, but not start the car.

Re: Replacement keys..

Yeah, when I bought my car, the person did not have the learner key. So I got screwed and they told me that they (Honda dealer) could not make more keys unless they installed a new immobilizer system.
So that all cost a pretty penny. But now I can get all the keys I want!!

Re: Replacement keys..

Well since you have a red key and a working key. You can either get a copy cut and clone the working key's transponder or have a new key cut and use the red key to authorise it.

If you mean that you only have the red key and the valet (grey) key. Then if you were cloning, then you would clone the valet's transponder, but get the key cut from the VIN (will fit everything that way). Shouldn't cost anywhere near a bajillion dollars to have a key cut from the VIN at the dealership.

Only thing that costs lots is when you lose all keys. Then they have to replace the immobiliser system and start again with a new red key. As long as you either have a red key to add new keys to the system or a working key to clone, then you should be ok.

Re: Replacement keys..

Loews Home Improvement can make a transponder key from an original, last one I had made was $21, first try did not work, second worked fine.
