New Prelude.... problems

Ok, so I bought a 98 prelude a few days ago. 140 Km's 5pd. My first car.

Yesterday i topped up all the fluids + coolant.

Today, i took a look at the coolant level.. and its already 2 inches down? (from being full) However, it was nearly empty before I topped it. Is this a cause for concern?

Also, the car hasn't been exactly reliable with starting up especially in the night when temps are getting below freezing. Sometimes it starts strong... other times i turn the key and nothing happens? For instance this morning it took 3 tries turning the key before anything happened but when it did start it sounded strong.

I bought the car from the original owner who seemed to have taken good care of it... new battery was put in last year.

I'm hoping the 2nd issue is just the battery... not something that will bankrupt me. Is there anyone who knows more about cars and can help?

Re: New Prelude.... problems

uh check for leaks for the fluids

and maybe the car is having trouble detecting the chip in the key? (if you have another key try that and see if you get the same problem)

Re: New Prelude.... problems

I doubt there's a leak. all the fluid probably just settled into the engine

Re: New Prelude.... problems

I just went outside to try it.. of course it starts up perfectly 3 times in a row..

I believe it makes one click when it doesn't start up.

Re: New Prelude.... problems

Make sure you have coolant in the overflow. When the engine cools, it draws coolant from there back into the radiator. Also, make sure the ignition switch recall has been done on the car.

Re: New Prelude.... problems

x2/3/4 on the coolant settle.. there's nothing wrong.. it just made it's way into the engine...

did the 2nd owner drive it around a lot? or was it sitting when you got it.

im thinking the more you crank it up the better it will be..a car likes to be driven consistantly..sometimes when i don't use my lude all weekend, it slightly hesitates when i crank it up.

the only thing i could think of that isn't super expensive, (if your ignition, isn't bad. and your alternator and battery are good to go) i would think it might be your ignition coil...that sometimes causes similar starting issues..

When i bought the car it had been sitting for.... 3 weeks with barily any oil or coolant now that i think about it so I'm not worried about that anymore.

the battery was replaced a year ago.. so I doubt its that, and I left the owner a message asking if he'd done the recall on the ignition.

Re: New Prelude.... problems

Yea hondas don't like to start if they've sat for more than a few days( in my experience). I'd say your good to go, if it continues to give trouble after its been driven for a while though THEN I would start to look more heavily into it. Again, check the ignition recall and get it done if it hasn't. If it is still unreliable on start I'd check your battery( meaning clean/secure terminals, and or replace if necessary.) If it persists I would check starter grounds and the starter after that.

Good luck man, And welcome to PZ!

Re: New Prelude.... problems

when you start the car look to see if the green light with the key symbol comes on. if it doesnt come on the times the car doesnt start then the problem is with the key firebos7 said.

if it had been sitting without oil.. that in of itself could be an issue with rough starts.

i would change to oil..if you haven't already.. don't just "add oil" to it.

Re: New Prelude.... problems

Could it be the spark plugs? I have a beater car that was having troubles starting. It turned out to be the spark plugs were worn and the spacing of the plug was off. Bent them back to the correct spacing and car has started fine since.

Re: New Prelude.... problems

Took it to a buddy of mine today..
the rear brakes were installed.... wrong by the previous owner.
the rotors were being literally cut in half by the shims. Another week or so of driving... they would have cracked in the middle of the road.

The battery level is fine. Changed the oil, air filter.

been starting up good so far :)

Re: New Prelude.... problems

Rotors being but by shimes have been a common issue. Alot of pads have shime glued on, and the glue fails pretty quickly causing it to come off and cut the rotor. It is not an install issue but part issue most of the time.
