Slight grind going into 5th, short shifter?

I just bought a 5th gen and when i was test driving the car the guy told me he put a short shifter in. This made it so that going into 5th, it makes a slight grind sound. He told me that 5th was not as far over with the short shifter.

My question is, if i replaced the short shifter for a stock one, will the grind go away?

Its probably an adapter, so either put the stock back on or pony up the dough and get the PSpec short shifter.

Im curious to hear the answer to this question as well. ^That did not answer anything? He wasnt looking for suggestions on a better short shifter he wants to know if short shifters in general intensify grinds. I want to know this as well. bump

Hmm, when i hear 'grind' i'm thinking possibly a synchro issue, not sure that the short shifter has much to do with it, i've driven an mr-2 & an integ with short shifters & 'never' had a grinding issue, now some kits require you to trim or shave around the shifter frame for more clearance so that the shifter doesn't push against the surface

Re: Slight grind going into 5th, short shifter?

Is the grind coming from inside the gearbox, or the shifter hitting the console?

If it's a mechanical grind, then the synchro is probably on it's way out. Check your MTF first, if that doesn't fix it, save your pennies as you'll need a rebuild.

If it's grinding on the console, slap the guy upside the head, as he doesn't know how install shift kits.

Re: Slight grind going into 5th, short shifter?

i have a short shifter adapter and definitely have no grinds whatsoever. it sounds like a bad synchro on the 5th gear...

Re: Slight grind going into 5th, short shifter?

Yeah it could be the 5th gear syncro problem as Derek said. I had this issue on my last 97 UKDM Lude, the grind was only noticable when changing at high RPM, say 90mph. Does your grind happen at any/all RPM's?

Yeah unfortunately, i'd say he told you that just so he DIDN'T have to tell you that the reason its grinding is because the tranny syncro. Either he isn't very mechanically inclined or he was just lying to you.

Since fixing the problem would require you to fully remove the tranny and all.. It could be pricey, so a temporary solution would be to just double clutch when going into 5th, or super granny shift. This might help to not make the problem worse until you can fix it.
