Icon5 self-locking nuts...

I had my transmission out to do the clutch, I also did the evil Main Oil Seal...it was fine and I just wanted to do preventive maintenance (lots of people told me to...on here as well)...should have left it alone...anywho its leaking like a sieve. There we a lot of nuts and bolts in the suspension and tranny itself that, in the manual, were supposed to be "replaced"...I did replace all of those specific items when I reinstalled the tranny, my question is do I have to replace them again even though I didn't put any miles on the car yet???

In other words if I tightened the "self-locking nuts" or new bolts during reassembly do I HAVE to replace them again or can I get away with just taking them off and reusing them? I would rather not as they ALL cost a bundle just for some nuts and bolts...but if I really should please let me know...just looking for some insight from a person who knows for sure either way. I do not want my car to fall apart while driving down to road. Thanks for the help!!!

Re: self-locking nuts...

I think you can re-use the self locking nuts.

Now you see why peeps recommend not doing something, unless its broke ;)

Re: self-locking nuts...

Everyone told me TO DO IT as my Prelude has 180k...friends, techs I know...even people here! But in the future, for me, "Ain't broke don't even touch it"!!! Indeed!

Re: self-locking nuts...

i've been reusing almost every single nut and bolt over again on the entire car (minus the ones that i've broke/snapped) with zero problems

don't worry about it.

it sounds like you didn't install the main seal correctly if it's leaking and its brand new. how did you seat it?

Re: self-locking nuts...

I seated it with the old one...as the manual said to buy a special tool...the old one mates up perfectly and allows room for the area you don't want to touch. I have everything off besides the transmission...I have to get some help to lower it.

well i mean how did you physically install the seal? a hammer and the seal driver?

i simply used a 2x4 and a hammer, and pressed it in perfectly even and haven't had any problems at all.

Re: self-locking nuts...

Now that I think about it...I did use a piece of wood and hammer...it sure looked flush. I may have used too little Hondabond or something on the cover?

Re: self-locking nuts...

I have a hard copy of the Helm Shop manual (which is awesome to have) and did not fully understand the "gap" that has to be between the aluminum bracket lip and the oil seal itself but now I do and am about to install again with another new Main Oil seal. The whole "gap" that is supposed to be between the bracket and MOS is very much NOT clear in the shop manual!! I will post pics of the correct gap-ing if all goes well during install this time...also I will post pics of the MOS that was eaten by my crankshaft...LOL!
