For those of you who've upgraded alternators..

Hello, new here. I am starting a new sound system project in a 99 prelude and would like to know what others have done to upgrade the factory 70 amp alternator. I know there are aftermarket ($$$) alternators out there for the prelude, but was hoping to do more of a factory upgrade. Perhaps a honda accord alternator might work for me? Something like that.. I don't need a ton of amperage but just looking for something better than the stock 70 amp alternator. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: For those of you who've upgraded alternators..

you can go to your local ignition shop and have them upgrade ur stock alternator. they can go all the way up to about 140 amps i believe. costs around 75 or 80 bones though. just a suggestion!

Re: For those of you who've upgraded alternators..

You can take yours to a shop and have it "rebuilt" to throw out more Amperage. But the most important thing is heat dissipation. Many people think that a 70Amp alternator will output 70Amps forever, this is a common misconception. It will output 70Amps for a period of time until it heats to a point where it puts out a fraction of the total output. Once it cools down enough it will output 70Amps again. So to dissipate heat and get the most output from an alternator people will weld heat fins on to their alternator or get a water-cooled alternator. The water-cooled ones are seriously expensive but worth it depending on your needs. Good luck.

Great that is basically what I'm looking to do.. beef up my stock alternator or just do a factory upgrade. I've already looked into the Irraggis but too much money and just not necessary for me. Thank you guys for the input!

lol... I missed this.

Your best bet is to do what mortified said, have your factory alternator re-wound/rebuilt. You aren't going to get a 150A alternator out of the deal, the casing is just too small...
But a good electric motor guy can probably squeeze 90 to 100A--

What kind of system are you planning on?
