Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

New member here and I hope to be a new prelude owner soon.

There is one in my area I am going to look at, but I don't know that much about the cars.

here is the ad

asking price is 4200$

Quote:
1999 Honda Prelude Coupe, 200 hp, VTEC, Body in great condition, 147k miles, mooroof, new automatic trans, complete tune up, waterpump/timing belt. No trades. Clear title.
and pics

1999 Prelude Vtec 2.2L - a set on Flickr

I know it is an auto, I commute in the city and actually prefer an auto, and the autos have problems. It says new trans so I'm not sure if that is good or not.

any info and insight would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I also have the carfax but I don't know how to post a direct link to it

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

Look ok, Mileage is a lil high

uh go talk to the guy, if he seems like someone that has really taken care of it and it seems to be in good condition it might be ok

should be able to talk him down a bit

not if u take care of them
i have a 99 prelude an its got 123k on it. my trans hasnt given any trouble yet (knock on wood) i suggest u get a tranny cooler for it, also dont forget to change the fluid. it should be a red color.
also talk him down to abt 3800 an see wut happens.

it looks like a good car, the owner put a type-s intake so he must know a little abt preludes. from the pic the exhaust looks a lil black, maybe from high-rev style of drivin, which cud kill ur auto tranny or maybe ur passin a little oil.

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

Auto trans aren't the greatest, but its a prelude :). Go take a look at the car, talk to the guy, see if it sounds legit. She if he has service records for the new trans too.

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

as the years of the 5th gen increase the better the auto tranny got, but still no where near 100 percent...u can count on 60-90k miles on a original auto tranny to show signs of breakdown..i wouldnt worry if the sellers says its rebuilt..also the timing belt, balancer belt, water pump, tensioner set up should have been changed just before 100k, see if there is any records..if not plan on doing that before u have more problems than u want, just regular maintenance can go a long way for a car that wil give you 250k when treated right...

If the transmission was really "new" or more likely recently rebuilt then you can expect a long life left out of it I would expect. Once you have it for a while you will wish you had a 5 speed though, they are way better IMO. Either way you should have plenty of time after you buy it to make an educated decision as to where you would like to go with the car.

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

The body looks immaculate, but the engine and trans are a little harder to figure out. I agree, talk to the guy, see how his personality is if he seems like a wreckless or a careful guy. Better yet, have your own personal mechanic take a look at it. It's worth it to really do your research for it because it's easier to research and keep on looking than to buy it and get stuck with it.

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

Honestly that is a nice clean looking Prelude, he knows his stuff and it looks like he took care of that car pretty damn well.

Make sure to find out engine info - timing belt, water pump, engine seals (BIGGY!!!) and the like - see if you cant get a hold of paperwork on the car, like if he kept records of work done to it w/ receipts and all that good stuff

Re: Thinking Of Buying 99 Prelude

I thought things seemed weird with this seller

I could never get him on the phone, he would never call when I left a message

only way I ever could correspond with him was in emails, and he would even acknowledge that he got my voicemails

well after a week of emails back and forth he decides to tell me he forgot to mention that he wanted $5200, not $4200 like the ad stated and that the lowest he would go is $5000

so either a scam or some bs

so the hunt shall continue
