Lost compression in Cyl 1

Hey PZ! Wasn't around for a long time so I missed all of you!

Yesterday was driving to work, and the car started loosing power and turned off. Tried to turn it back on and no luck. Towed it to my mechanic, did a compression test and Cyl 1 was at 45psi and 190psi on the rest. Motor has 191K and its a 1998 SH.

Parked the car in a garage, took the head off. Cyl 1 exhaust valve is leaking and from a further inspection i found a little scratch mark on the valve it self and the valve seat (from friction).

So now I have no idea what to do?!?!

I have a few questions for you guys:

If i get new valves, can I just put them in without any head work? or I would have to do something like Valve Seat Lapping (one of my friends told me that)? Or a machine shop involved?

If I get new piston rings and Rod Bearings, Can I put them in my self or have to get the Machine shop involved?

I think its a good thing that it happened now and close to my house. So now i have some engine building to do! And its fun!

Pics are coming soon of the little rebuild.

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Re: Lost compression in Cyl 1

if you get new rings and bearing i would get the shop to do it... because you'd really need to check all the surfaces and gaping on the rings... its better to leave it to the pros... unless you got pro that are friends that will help you for free.... thats all ways a plus...

Thanks Russ. I'm sick of MTA already. I want my car back on the road.
