Making new keys for 97 Prelude

Hi I'm to the forums and I tried searching for what I'm looking for but nothing on these forums to my knowledge. I bought my first Lude yesterday. Its a 97 and only came with one key. I'm a locksmith and can program new keys in most cars but this one got me in a corner and maybe some of you can help me.

I have an original black key but no "red" key. My book says I need the "red" key to program extra keys in the car. Is the red key really a red key on the head?

I've made 2 new transponder keys and tried to program them into the ECU but nothing.

I know I need the red key but is there a way around this besides cloning my original black key or getting a whole new ECU??? I'm assuming it will work if I just clone the chip in the black key but I don;t have a cloning machine yet =o(

Any knowledgeable advise will be appreciated...

Thanks..

Use a T-5 Key to make a copy its the only way to do it without having to replace all the locks and such.

As far as I know you can just buy a blank T5 key and clone your existing black one and get as many spares as you want.

For a new red key Honda replace the entire immobiliser system and start from scratch (expensive). There is also JCS Automotive Locksmiths - Services

no you dont need the red key. when i got my lude is only came with one too. honda wanted like 60 for the key and another 100 to program it. i just went to a locksmith type guy downtown. he was able to do it for like $35 so i was pretty siked.

Check into the dealership. I know from experience, make friends with them!! At one point or another you will have to deal with them and alot of times they will hook you up on this sort of thing where the parts guy can do it and it doesn't require a tech that gets paid $$$$. I didn't have a red key and had others programmed. For our style keys the vehicle isn't required. They can clone the key you currently have. Should work. He told me he has seen circumstances when it doesn't tho.

Re: Making new keys for 97 Prelude

I feel bad for bringing up a year+ old post but I figured its better here then a new one. I also have a 97 lude and I have to keys. I bought the car with a black one and the dealer made me a red one. The black one will start the car but the red one doesnt. They tried to program it but it didnt work. I personally know some of the tech there and I know they arent really upto par with actually trying to fix somthing. They just want to sell the bigger issue vs actually tryin to help. Anyhow can I program the red key off the black? From what Ie read it doesnt really sound like it but I thought i would ask the stupid question regardless.

I feel like I should be the one to state the obvious...The "red" key is actually pink. It's not even remotely "red".

Red (pink) key doesn't start the car. Is used only for programming new keys.
