Icon7 What do you guys think is better for snow?

A set of real dedicated winter tires, Blizzak WS-50's? Or all season tires with a limited slip diff installed? I'm thinking of doing the diff because I might be moving to a very snowy state and like to auto X my car, my prelude is my dd/Auto X car. I know the diff is way more money esp since I will have to have it pro installed but what do you guys think would suit my needs better. I've driven fwd cars with WS-50's before and was really impressed with what they can do. And to everyone who is going to say don't drive the Lude in winter cause of road salt and what not, even in winter my car is thoroughly waxed at least twice a month to keep it protected. It also has a fresh undercoating and original galvanized body panels everywhere. My car is a 2000 Base, not a SH. Just out of curiosity does the ATTS system do anything to improve traction from a stop or does it only really work its magic in the turns. What diff would you guys recommend for sheer grip in the slippy stuff? Sorry if this has been covered before buy I'm new to the Honda world and have only driven VW/Audi's in the past. I must say tho My 2000 Prelude MT-5 puts both my old Corrado's to shame, both were 1993 SLC VR6 models.

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

ATTS only works on corners. Is computer controlled and has multiple sensors, including a steering angle sensor.

For an LSD you basically have two options. OEM or aftermarket.
OEM means a transmission from a Prelude SiR S Spec or a Accord Type-R/Euro-R.
Aftermarket you have Quaife, Kaaz, etc.

Quaife is probably the best option, although I have no idea what difference it would make on snow/ice.

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

winter tires end of story..i dont care for LSD or not..snow is snow ice is ice..

you want to gain more traction..its the tires touching the ground not the limited slip..its just distributing the power to the tires.

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

I'm not positive of the benefits for LSD on a FWD car, however on a RWD Ford F-150 towing snowmobiles in the winter it was a lifesaver. We were able to go more places easier than most people in a 4WD truck. One time as we were driving up a hill to one of our favorite snowmobiling destinations the rear tires would just start spinning on the snow on the road so we put the right rear tire on the gravel shoulder and viola, we had traction.

Putting the power to the tire with traction is generally pretty helpful in snowy conditions.

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

Michelin X-Ice Xi2 and Nokian Hakkapeliitta's are the best snow tires IMO. A good set of snow tires is the best thing you can do to your car to survive the snow.

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

Well you've already said you want to do more auto-X so an LSD will be of great benifit there. So why not just get both?

Re: What do you guys think is better for snow?

If you drive in snow you do NOT want a LSD front wheel drive. You will find yourself in the ditch more than anything. As you corner your inside wheel will want to maintain the same speed as the outside wheel, thus, losing traction and effectively pushing your car to the outside of the corner placing you in the ditch. RWD is a different story and can help with traction. FWD, not so much.

As far as tires go, I don't have experience with those exact tires but as someone else mentioned. Nokain Hakkapelita (sp?) 2 is a fantastic tire. I have mine studless and my car is as unstopable in winter as a car with only a few inches of ground clearance can be. Montana winters can be tough, we commonly have snow and near melting snow which makes for BAD roads.
