engine light, oil, stall

Hi, i have a 2000 prelude sh, its got a few problems, the check engine light goes on and off periodically, checked the code and its coming up as a cylinder 3 misfire so i swapped the plugs (didnt work), also it idles around 300rpm (heard thats normal) but it shakes and lags when its warm, and generally sometimes when i push the clutch in to stop, it stalls out, or if i go to put it into nuetral, last but not least the exhaust is spitting oil on the rear bumper ;(, any help would be very much appreciated, thank you

Re: engine light, oil, stall

Did the spark plug not have oil on it? Check your other plugs.

Re: engine light, oil, stall

sounds like you need a full tune up... plugs wires cap and rotor. oil spitting out of exhaust sounds like your catalytic converter is blown out or you have a bad valve cover leak.

Re: engine light, oil, stall

you sure its oil on your bumper, and not just black soot. when was the last time you did a tune up?

could be soot, have only had the car for 3 to 4 months, havent gotten a tune up yet, bout to get one, i thought mayb it was oil because of the 3rd cylinder misfire, not 100 percent sure i think im gonna take it to a honda tech

Re: engine light, oil, stall

ludes naturally burn a little rich and will cause a black soot on the bumper. i doubt its oil if non of your spark plugs had oil on them. you probably need a simple tune up. but don't waste your money taking it to a mechanic for them to tell you that.

Re: engine light, oil, stall

Exactly what everyone else said, and I would even do a little more...

Do the plugs, wires, and distributor (cap and rotor) for sure

If you are adventurous and mechanically inclined, I would also check/clean/replace your EGR valve, Check to see if the EGR ports have been replaced (if not, do this... with 147,000 miles on your engine this will be very helpful if it hasn't already been done), possibly a valve lash job (especially if you are getting the patented Honda valve tick... if you do a valve lash job, change your valve cover gasket and spark plug rubber grommets too while you're in there, and don't forget to hit the corners with honda bond or high temp silicone RTV), clean/replace your vtec solenoid gasket/filter, check/clean your IACV and replace the rubber "o-ring" in there (get the o-ring before you even take the IACV off... when I took mine off the existing o-ring was so badly out of shape that I couldn't make it fit back in and had to replace it anyway), do an oil change, etc...

Basically, now would be a good time to do all the little stuff. This is all stuff you can do from up top (other than the oil change) and don't need to be a mechanical wizard to do. On an older car with that many miles, I like to take this approach and just clean/replace all the little cheap stuff that I can, this way I can rule all the little stuff out as possible causes for the problems.
