Help, my lude sounds like a diesel....

At low RPMs my base 5th gen sounds like a diesel, but at idle and above 2.5,3krpm it goes away. Pushing in the clutch doesnt make the noise go away. I dont know when the last valve adjust was, or if its ever had one (96k miles as of now). Could the noise be related to no valve adjust? What could make it sound like this? thx

I've noticed cars will do that when they're low on oil.

Re: Help, my lude sounds like a diesel....

it is either 1 of 2 things....

1- your valve lash needs to be adjusted. Its not something you want to do if your not experienced doing it. I had a friend do it on his and it made his civic sounds like there were marbles on top of his pistons.

2- You have a hole in your flex pipe (exhaust). It looks almost like the metal tubes that are on the back of your dryer for the washing machine. Often times when these get holes in them it sounds like your motor is sputtering although it really isn't.

$20 bucks says its one of those.

Re: Help, my lude sounds like a diesel....

It could be numerous things So heres a question i got for the op.. how long as it been since youve done a checkup fuel filter, injectors, plugs etc... Fuel starvation will make it sound like a diesel I say do a few tests if you know how to, or go to autozone and use their scantool and see the readouts and freezeframe it.
I know it sounds a bit out there to say this but I always learned what is going to save me the most money so I dont throw money away when I can save it and not misdiagnose a problem.

If his car was having a fuel starvation problem I'm sure he wouldn't be driving it, or he would realize its a more serious problem then just a sound. Since he said that its just sounding like a diesel and not bucking around I'd again, put my money on a hole in the exhaust or valve lash.

Are you throwing any CEL codes?

Re: Help, my lude sounds like a diesel....

Thanks for the replies fellas, been off the forums for a few months (major eye surgery) Its definitely top end noise, not a exhaust leak. I did a tune up, plugs, wires, cap/rotor but its still making the noise. It runs/idles and pulls like a champ still. Im going with valve adjust, what should I expect to pay at a Indy shop for a valve adjustment? Screw the stealership :)

need more info on this. been running my flex pipe leak for a year now because I like how it sounds and didn't think it affected anything since its after the O2 sensor. I get about 300 miles a tank so gas mileage is pretty average too. Pulled old spark plugs out and looks normal.

not sure what is meant by sputtering but my lude at idle sort of sounds like a sprinkler.

The "sprinkler" sound could be bad valve lash. Try adjusting the valve lash and see if the noise goes away.

Also, to the OP, if you are still on the forums, did you ever fix the problem? If it was none of the above, it could be your timing belt tensioner failing, causing belt slap.

theres no tapping just a slow wssh wssh wssh wssh and its not coming from the head. the exhaust leak is doing it. When warm at idle it makes the car sound like it has a big cammed V8 but without the popcorn sound.
