Need some advice!

Hello there! I'll be honest - I don't normally venture to Japanese car forums (I stay with the Italians & Bavarians :) ), but I've got a special request from a friend to do some research on a fifth gen Prelude he wants to buy as a first car. I'll be honest - the only searching I've done is a quick 20 minute forum search and read the stickied 5 post-thread consisting of everything about the fifth gen Prelude, so hopefully go easy on me :(

My friend is looking for the most HP 'lude he can find here in Canada (stock). I realize that a VTEC engine wasn't offered in Canada, but I have seen many being imported. These come with the H22A1 or A2 depending on the model, correct? I know these engines will last forever if they're maintained well, which is normally the case. We're also looking for a 5 speed so we won't be affected by the auto trannys.

Anything else to take note of? Other than the usual rust :)

first off, there IS VTEC engines in canada, called H22a4 in the 5th gen preludes 97@01, producing 195-197 hp @flywheel

for a quick answer, the fastest N/A lude would probably be a H22a ( jap version ) type S engine ( better cams / pistons, / higher compression ratio )
in a 4th gen lude ( 93?@96 ) that would be 217hp ''stock''

correct me if I'm wrong people

As said above VTEC engines are avaliable in Canada. Mine is VTEC and bought straight from a dealer here ( 5th gen H22a4). Alot of canadian models came with the gorgeous heated seats and mirrors aswell. If your looking for the quickest stock lude i assume its the H22a4. The 5 speed ludes are known to produce a few more ponies just because you lose power through an auto tranny. Pretty basic concept. As for the auto tranny failure. Not true. 97+98 had some very poor trannies and often were rebuilt before or just over 100k. The 99-01's have a much better tranny and have way less of a failure rate. If at any point you plan to build this car go 5 speed.Unless your willing to import/ engine swap for the jdm h22a.

As above about the availablility of the H22 engine. I believe that all 97-01 Preludes delivered to Canada had the H, though aren't 100% sure on that. Possibly the confusion has been that there was no "VTEC" model? They were Prelude (base) and Prelude SE.

Maintenance is the thing to look out for, timing belt, tensioner, etc - usual stuff. The engines demand premium fuel, however as the cars have gotten cheaper, some cheaper owners have bought them and filled them with regular. I personally would run in the opposite direction as fast as I could from an example that hasn't been served with a diet of premium all it's life. The engine has a knock sensor, though as with all engines, the knock sensors aren't totally reliable, and I'd be worried about the damage done before the knock sensor picks up detonation.

Sunroof drain tubes can become blocked, though that's an easy fix.

Wheel alignment is key

If your friend is chasing an ATTS model, make sure he only plans mild mods. While the ATTS responds very well to basic mods like intake/header/exhaust/tune, only a piggyback computer can be used, or else you'll lose the ATTS. If a big build is on the cards, get a base. Though if the goal is the basic stuff, then I'd be searching for an ATTS.
