Need your opinions! 99 lude

I'm looking at a 99 prelude with a swapped JDM h22a. Here's the craigslist ad. I drove it today and it seems quite smooth. Let me know what you guys think!

It looks hella clean in the pictures but it does have a couple dents and scratches. It used to have a big wing so it has plugs in the trunk etc so it isnt perfect.

Completely stock 99 honda prelude, 5 speed manual with clear title and carfax in hand vin# jhmbb614xc00938.
Chasis has127,000 miles, but has professionally installed jdm h22a motor with about 45k and running original odd2 ecu with no engine check lights.
Full black leather interior, cold ac, heater, pw steering, power windows, locks, cruise control. and sunroof.
New clutch, front, rear and balance shaft seal, brand new axles.
Comes with aftermarket jvc cd player and rockford fosgate speaker
Will also come with eibach lowering springs if sold close to asking price
price$ 5,699 obo

I didn't take a look at it as I didn't have much time. Yeah I'm new so tell me how you can tell it's not an H22A

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

well, (correct me if im wrong, i prob am, im super tired) it doesnt have a red valvecover. but some h22a's did come with black vc's. the easiest way to tell is check the passenger side (your left if your facing it) of the block and see if its stamped. if it says h22a4, its not jdm

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

I'll check the engine code when I go check it out again. I have a friend with a H22A that when he bought came with a black VC. I think you are right though, but it's possible they are just switched or something else etc. I'll figure out for sure.

Any other opinions?

I'm just a little hesitant cause its gonna cost pretty much all of my savings as of now. :(

well, small dents and dings are nothing. any used car comes with those. interior and exterior look super clean. ask him for maintenance records (and reciepts if it really is an engine swap)

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

1) It is most def a H22 engine
2) Five lug hubs from factory denote factory fitment of the H22 engine
3) Most H22s came from factory with a black valve cover. Red ones only came on Type S engines. Believe it or not, not all JDM engines have teh red cover.

Only the type s came with a factory red top.

In the US all 5th gen preludes came with an h22a4 and 5 lugs.

I'm sure you caught what they were saying but the discussion is about it being an h22a instead of the h22a4 that came in the cars here in the US.

scfreshy, just check the block stamp that is all you can do to know if it is a jdm engine or not.

I think it looks real good, like others said check for matinence receipts. Especially if they claim to have just put in a new clutch. Also being 127k I would assume the timing belt was done long ago but it never hurts to ask. Other than that I say jump on it before its gone, its clean as hell....although a new trunk lid is in order it looks like( or at least some bondo and a respray...)

He said he has a receipt for the engine from somewhere online. Also said the clutch was just a stock replacement so idk about a receipt. Any way I can tell the axles are new?

My main concern is that later on i'll have a problem with the swap. Something that isnt quite an engine problem but is more of a swap problem. I won't have much money left at all to fix it and so I have to count on this guy telling me it only has 45k and hope it runs for years to come.

If you're going to use that car as your daily, then I don't suggest buying it unless he can prove that the swap was done properly, and that it was taken care of. Now if you want to build it, buy it now! It's perfect for a fresh build.

Ok thanks for the suggestion. I really would love to build it...it's just that I am unemployed so any sort of building wouldn't happen soon.
I'm torn right now...I want the car extremely badly but I don't know if it's the smartest/most economical choice. But I'm 19 so who gives a sh** about the economical choice lol. I really dont know what I am gonna do.

well it's not the most economical choice, it doesn't get the greatest gas mileage in the world (though not terrible) and insurance will be a little bit expensive, plus you have to use premium gas

If you already have a car that you can drive daily then you should buy it and keep in uninsured and just build it. That's what I'm doing with my integra, and as soon as I find a 5th generation prelude in louisiana I'll start that build the same way. I'm 19 too by the way.

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

Drove it again today...looks like i'm not gonna get it. I took it on the highway and punching it on the on ramp i felt like I was going no where. To be honest my 116hp (at the crank) miata felt faster than this. It also knocked quite a bit. He said he was running regular instead of premium so I guess that counts for some of it...but I was just really expecting this to be a fast car, and it wasn't by any means. Really nice guy though so if any of you guys are in texas and are interested ill give you his number.

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

Yeah that definitely looks like an H22 engine, not sure if it's really JDM or USDM but definitely an h22.
It looks clean both inside and out bro, now just make sure it's problem-free and i think you've got it in the bag. Sounds like it doesn't pull hard enough by how you described it. Maybe you needed a compression test to confirm this, but then again you're not even going to get it anymore anyways. Good luck in finding another one, don't give up.

That'd be what reg gas will do. Put premium in it and come back to us and say it doesn't pull. specially under VTECCCCCCC...lol

yea. Well I've never done it...but the car is rated for premium gas, says so on the damn speedo.... Maybe someone has tried this? I honestly Can't believe that our preludes don't pull as much if not ALOT more than a miata...that just hurts my pride to even think that....

Re: Need your opinions! 99 lude

Yes, and prolonged use would hurt the engine. I'd run the opposite direction, and fast. If the owner is putting regular fuel in it rather than the premium that the engine demands it shows a lack of interest, and I almost guarantee that corners have been cut elsewhere. This is even more true if the car really does have a JDM engine, as JDM engines are tuned for Japanese unleaded fuel, which has an octane rating of 100RON - by comparison US regular fuel is around 89 or 90RON depending on what state you're in.

Note that the Japanese measurement of RON is different to what the US measurement is. US premium (94 octane) is close enough to 98RON, which is ok.

I put regular in mine the first week I had it on accident, and it didn't seem to make that much of a difference, so unless he's been runnin it on regular for that entire 45k I wouldn't think that would be the problem...

Ok Brash, i'm pretty sure I am headed away from it. I found out today that he also did not replace the engine mounts when he did the swap which I thought was stupid. I'll definitely keep looking as these cars are damn pretty and apparently pull lol. Just not the one I drove. Anyone in the Austin/San Antonio area that wants to let me see what their lude can do? I'd love to see what it's supposed to feel like!

Well admittadly the engine has a knock sensor, so suggestions of impending doom for anybody who runs regular fuel are in reality unfounded. However there is a chance that by the time the knock sensor picks up any detonation that may or may not have been happening, the damage will already be done. Detonation is bad, it eats pistons, and occasionally snacks on surrounding areas such as the bores, top of the combustion chamber (inc. valves) and if it's bad, the rods as well.

At the end of the day, you've bought a premium sports car. If you're too much of a tightarse to put higher octane fuel in it then you've bought the wrong car. I say it all the time, when sports cars become cheap, the wrong types of people buy them. One of the biggest victims of this is the fifth generation Prelude.
