Weird coolant leak...

So I have only had my lude for about two months. 99 Base model. When I got the car from the dealer it was low on coolant. I put some in and it was not really an issue after that. Well I just put on my new brakes and didnt notice any leaks. I did the driver side first. Then I did the passenger side and while it was jacked up on that side it leaked a little coolant on the driver side. (about half of the overflow tank) Now the dealer told me the timing belt and water pump were done and I saw there little "record" of it. What else would cause this? It leaked on the splash shield too so it was kinda more toward the front of the car. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Weird coolant leak...

Start the car up and pop the hood... Follow all your coolant lines and look really closely at all the seams of the radiator. If it is a good enough leak you can sometimes actually see it spraying out once it's hot and pressurized.

Just be REALLY careful to not get any hot coolant sprayed in your face... no fun.

I did start up the car and look. it wasnt warm yet tho. I didnt really see anything leaking, then i took it for a ride and parked it in the driveway and checked it about an hour later and nothing was leaking out..

Re: Weird coolant leak...

That is strange...

You said it only leaked when you had it jacked up right? Jack it up again and try to see where it's coming from...

Re: Weird coolant leak...

lol thanks. Yeah if its tilted to the one side it leaks a little... idk I usually have it on a hoist at work this was the first time it was jacked up in a garage. I'll jack it up sometime soon and see if I can pinpoint it. I still have a warranty from the dealer for another few weeks so hopefully I can screw them on this.

Re: Weird coolant leak...

I had the same situation about 2 weeks ago. I had a small leak and it was running onto the splash gaurd on the passenger side. I ran the car and checked underneath...nothing. But when I drove it which gives the hoses more pressure that I saw small leaks here and there. Then one day as im heading to work a notice a small spot in my driveway and when i got to the parking lot...less then 2 min I notice a HUGE puddle leaking out from under my car. I go and check to see if it was the upper or the lower hose. It was niether.

I had to constantly refill my rad and res bottle every few days. (so annoying and not cool)

Turns out that it was my coolant hose (that fukkin lil sukka)!!! That little hose gave out and was leaking like crazy and it had a huge crack.

Try checking your coolant hose...

Re: Weird coolant leak...

i have the same problem, i have bouncy idle too though, i got the car had it parked overnight, no leak, next day i jacked up the front end to get to the wires for the headlight above the passenger tire because they had a short, i look underneath and theres a coolant leak, took it off the jack no leak, next day i drove it up on ramps to get under it, coolant leak again, no idea where its coming from because i cant see it, seems like its coming up high from a hose on the back of the engine but i cant find it, theres a trail of it leaking down all the other hoses and down and off the splashguard, but when you look from the top you cant see anything, any ideas?

Re: Weird coolant leak...

I've had the same problem multiple times. First it was the heater hose running to the firewall. Then months later the IACV hose had a little pin hole and was spraying on the manifold. And the top rad hose had a leak when I bought the car. Those are the only 3 hoses I've had to replace so far in 70k since I bought the car.
