Hood prop options

I see lot of people working on their 5th Gens and see lots of photos of people doing the same on PA. This tip will make life easier for you when working on your car (a lot of people don't seem to know you can do this, hell I hadn't worked it out so I thought I'd show ya'll how.)

USING THE HIGH-HOOD SUPPORT:

This is the normal location of the hood support and hood position:

Right. So take the hood support rod out of its mount. Take a look and you'll notice that on the drivers side of the car there is a reinforced hole about 1/2 the way up the fender (labeled part 2 in below diagram.) The base of the hood support goes in here.

Then, take a look at the underside of the hood. You'll see a hood support hole on the driver side for the support rod to slot into (labeled part 1 in diagram below.)

Close-up of base of hood support with the support rod inserted:

Close-up of hood support hole in the hood with the support rod inserted:

And you wind up with your hood sitting much higher, allowing much more room to work under the car and also letting much more light in to see what you're doing. In fact the hood sits almost vertical (but won't fall backwards provided you've latched the hood support hook in properly)

Apologies if this is totally obvious to most people but everyone I speak to never realized that you could do this. It makes the most massive difference when you need to do a painful job like readjusting the valves or changing the intake manifold.

I'm interested to see whether many people knew you could do this - fill out the poll and we'll see.

And lastly, low vs high position.

Pictures have been used from various people's cars without permission. Special thanks to my mate AMPERAGE in Perth, WA for taking pics of his car for this.

never seen that. I did know you could prop it up vertical like and basically hang it form your ceiling(in garage...)

Also, note to all you noobs out there, When Collin says driver side he means the right side of the car...before people act stupid and try to point out that he mislabeled a picture....

Nope, I've never heard of, or seen that done before. Now I wanna go try it out, but cold, raining and after midnight here right now. Hopefully I'll be able to try this out sometime this week, thanks Collins

Re: Hood prop options

I did not know that. Do you use the same rod for the other one or is there a seperate rod hidden somewhere for the higher support?

edit: I just did it. you use the same rod and you have to put it back when your done.

Thanks Brash, I had no idea about this. I've seen teggys with their hoods literally vertical, without a hood prop. Do you know anything about this?

They have a hood damper/gas strut installed...much like I do. That was probably the best thing I've done to the car, as you never have to worry about leaning around the prop rod again.

The downside to it is that you basically have to break the plastic clip that holds it in place and keeps it from coming apart from the frame.

A mate of mine bought a set of ebay which seem to be working ok. Also, there's a writeup on how to modify a set of Integra dampers to work that edge2life posted a while ago.

Re: Hood prop options

i have a project at hand, i am going to make a double hood prop option, but the reguler hood prop will not fit on the side over there so is there a way to mount it and let it rest there, or is it a removal and re install everytime you do it?
