egr valve

just wondering if anybody has had trouble with the egr valve. Cell came up as insignificant air flow. Had it cleaned out worked fine for a week and came back on. Had it checked worked fine for couple of days cel back on. Mechanic said valve is still good just alot of carbon builting up.I know prelude produce alot of carbon. if anybody else has or had this problem any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: egr valve

I had the same issue... seafoam and replacing the egr valve gasket fixed it, then it would come back on so I would reset it and it would come back on after a few days... after about two weeks of that its been off ever since.

Re: egr valve

Yeah, even if you clean the egr valve itself, if you don't clean the passages in the intake you are fighting a losing battle. Seafoam works wonders.

Re: egr valve

I had the same problem, last week did the EGR port cleaning, no light since. Couple of hours is all it takes with a slide hammer, 10mm wrench, remove fuel rail, remove fuel regulator, remove plugs, clean with carb cleaner and reassemple.

Re: egr valve

If they say your EGR Valve is good, than try checking your EGR Solenoid. My car was throwing the code for the EGR valve, i changed it, and was throwing the same code. Turned out to be the EGR Solenoid not the valve.

Re: egr valve

Man....I too have had this problem...I replaced EGR valve, solenoid, hit it with sea foam, and ultimately took it to my mechanic. He took everything apart and cleaned the whole 9 yards no problem since.

Re: egr valve

I have also had this problem. I am in the process now of cleaning out the EGR ports on the intake manifold. So far I have only taken off the EGR valve and the ports there were completely clogged.

Re: egr valve

I was wondering, in order to clean the EGR ports do you have to buy EGR port plugs?

This same problem has been posted sooo many times SEARCH there is even a youtube video on it posted because it is so common. A service bulletin is out there as well with what to clean and the kit to replace the plugs.

I am having the same problem on my 98 prelude. Light went on around 110,000 miles or so probably.

Anyone on Long Island have a slide hammer I can borrow? Friend will clean it for me but I need to get a hammer. Hopefully that works and I dont hav eot buy the valve also.

Re: egr valve

I got the same problem as well. 99 Type SH 184,000km. I found a youtube video on how to clean it but why do I have to drill into those ports and how do I patch it? Kind of confusing.

Re: egr valve

You can buy the port plugs from Honda for 10 pack $2.00 max

Clean egr and all the ports with carb cleaner, hanger, and vacuum works as good as seafoam but is cheaper.

You will need a drill and a device like a slide hammer to remove the ports.

Re: egr valve

its probably how you drive your car, and you can take out the egr ports with a regular hammer you do not need a slide hammer.

Re: egr valve

I know this thread is old and I know how this is done but my plugs are the original ones. What I want to know is what happens if the plug shavings fall into the runners?

I took a SHOP VAC and made a small tube to insert into the runners to vacuum any trash in the runners.
