Clutch question

Hey,

Got a 2001 SH, and the clutch was replaced not too long ago, albeit by a shadetree mechanic. This was before I bought the car. Anyway, I can push the clutch pedal almost all the way to the floor before it engages, I'd say about an inch, inch and a half. When it does engage, it's like normal, so I don't think the clutch is going out. There's no grinding, or any funny noises, but it is kinda hard to get the stick into gear, as if it's not engaging ALL the way. Any ideas? I haven't checked the fluid, as the car's at home, cuz I had to get to work, but I'm pretty sure that all the fluids are okay. Let me know. Thanks.

doesn't sound like your clutch is gone, but it does sound like you lost some fluid

that'd be the first thing i'd check

About a month ago I bleed all the clutch fluid out because it was really dark. Made a brig difference in the pedal firmness.

Isn't there an adjustment you can make to the clutch to engage sooner?

Yes there is.
There should be slight play in the pedal, i mean slight.
People prefer it to be loose until they have to actually depress it to engage. . .
I like firm pedals myself.
This is what you do:

Go upside down with a 10-12mm rachet at your pedal assembly.
Where you see the master cylinder and where the clutch pedal meet, there is a 10-12mm bolt that you undo and move the pedal/spring closer or farther to firm(tighten)up the pedal/master clyinder engagement.

I did this twice, each time i changed the master cylinder.
Usually, shops forget to do this.
NO.
THEY ALWAYS FORGET.

Im pretty sure this will solve your problem.
*note, dont give it too much slack or once the clutch itself gets warmed up, you'll find yourself revvin` and no power. Make sure the clutch engages correctly after doing this procedure.

Quick update. Looked at the fluid...damn near empty. Talked to my dad, who's a mechanic, and told me to take a look at where the rod from the pedal goes through the firewall to the master cylinder for a slimy mess..Guess what I found? Yup, a slimy mess, yay a bad master cylinder...just what I needed....thanks for the suggestions all, appreciate the feedback. Oh, anyone got a suggestion about whrer to get a new one? I looked on slhondaparts.com, and too expensive ($98). Also, partstrain.com, and found some aftermarket ones between $50-$75...is it worth going with a cheaper one, or find one that's more expensive? I'm getting at is this one of those parts where you get what you pay for?

Get Nissin brand Master cylinder or OEM.

Update, my dad got me a new OEM (Nissin/Adler) for $41. Went in just fine, but took a bit to bleed out all the air. Had to crack the B-nut on the outlet line to get an air pocket out. Anyway, thanks again all...

^ my throwout bearing went on mine and my clutch master cylinder. Leaked fluid all over my new stage 2 clutch and aluminum flywheel. destroyed my clutch and cracked the steel plate on the flywheel. make sure you got all that fluid cleaned up, you will hate life if you don't.
